Future of Community Center to be Looked At Next Month

Wellesley Community Center board of directors will submit its "needs list" for the future of the property April 4.

Yesterday, interested parties met to rehash issues about the future of the Wellesley Community Center.

Selectwoman Terri Tsagaris told the board of selectmen last night that at a meeting among representatives of the board of selectmen, the Wellesley Council on Aging, the Wellesley Community Center and Wellesley Friendly Aid which took place earlier in the day, selectmen reiterated the board’s desire to and have the facility be owned by the town.

The community center facility would house the Council on Aging, Friendly Aid and the Service League, according to Tsagaris.

“In order to go forward with any plan that would accommodate all four of these interests, it’s necessary that everybody comes up with a 'needs lists' in terms of spaces, user groups and hours of operation,” Tsagaris said.

The community center board of directors told Tsagaris they would have their needs list submitted by April 4.

As part of the needs list, the community center board of directors will also make public its decision to allow the town to take down the current community center building along with the Friendly Aid house and Service League barn.

The representatives of these boards re-examined these issues because the community center board of directors, in a letter dated March 9, wrote that they would no longer consider town-purchase of the property due to their perception that questions by the board of selectmen – such as which groups would be eligible to use the community center – .
