School Committee revises iPad plan, parents don't pay and tablets stay at school, YourTown reports.
While Wellesley students may be learning on iPads soon, their parents may not have be picking up the tab. At a recent School Committee meeting, the Committee revised its iPad program proposal, according to a YourTown Wellesley report. Under the original proposal, students would bring their iPads home with them and pay for renting them. Under the new proposal, the iPads would stay at school. The Wellesley Public School website has updated its information on the iPad program, indicating that funding for the program can come from the Wellesley Education Foundation, school parent-teacher organizations, and some changes to the school budget. School committee is proposing a plan to require iPads for incoming fifth grade students.
The Wellesley School Committee is gearing up to propose expanding their 1:1 tablet pilot--we want to know what you think. Educators say that the students started seeing their iPads more as tools than as toys. Based on the success of the program, officials are considering making iPad rental or purchase a requirement for all incoming 5th graders in the district. The school district will hold a forum in the coming weeks to discuss the discoveries and possible future of this program on a larger scale on Jan 10, at 7 p.m. in the Library's Wakelin room. School forums held later this month will discuss a program requiring all students to buy or lease iPads.
For about a year, some students at the Schofield Elementary School have been using iPads. With the support of the Wellesley Education Foundation (WEF), the district pulled together a pilot 1:1 tablet program, under which every student uses an iPad in the classroom. The school district will hold two forums in the coming weeks to discuss the discoveries and possible future of this program on a larger scale.
