Should Wellesley Adopt Boston's Youth Sports Head Injury Rules?

Teams and coaches must be trained in concussion identification and prevention.

Boston's new youth sports head injury ordinance took effect earlier this week. Starting Nov. 26, Youth Sports leagues and teams face a set of new requirements to help reduce the number of concussions and other brain injuries caused by contact sports. Youth sports teams must now have in place training for staff to both identify and manage head injuries, according to MyFoxBoston.  The new rules apply to both public and private groups, going a step beyond state law, which requires head injury training for staff of high school and public teams. Community centers that organize games and any group that needs a permit for city-owned property would also have to follow the rules, according to The Boston Globe. Former NBA Player Bob Bigelow Urges Parents to Make Fun a Priority in Youth Sports

He also warns parents against pushing children to specialize in a single sport too early.

Former NBA basketball player Bob Bigelow told an audience at Wellesley Middle School last night that parents should concentrate on making sure their kids are having fun playing a variety of youth sports rather than getting too serious, too soon. In a talk sponsored by the Wellesley Youth Basketball Association, Bigelow also talked about the importance of designing youth sports programs that prioritize children's needs.  "I would like to meet the needs of all of our kids, rather than the adults need to compete through our chidren," he said.
