More Weed Reported Than in Past Years at Wellesley High

Police report a higher number of incidents of students with marijuana at the high school than in past years.

The number of Wellesley High School students getting caught with marijuana is unusually high.  Last week, Wellesley Schools held an assembly to talk about the recent rise in the use of pot among the student population. There have been six instances of students found with marijuana, according to a Swellesley Report story. This is more than in past years, and with Wellesley's by-laws prohibiting possession of less than an ounce of weed, olice issued town bylaw citations to the six students. lt has been decriminalized at a state level, however. “We have certainly seen a lot more young people openly driving around in cars – and when I say young people, it could be college-aged or people who are in their early to mid-20s, or things of that …

Mass. Not in Top 10 for Graduation Rate, Wellesley Above State Average

Massachusetts had an adjusted graduation rate of 83 percent for the 2010-2011 school year. How did Wellesley High compare?

Massachusetts didn't make the top 10 high school graduation rates in the nation, according to preliminary data released by the U.S. Department of Education on Monday, but Wellesley schools have a higher graduation rate than the state average. The graduation rates released Monday are for the 2010-2011 school year—the first year for which all states used a common, adjusted four-year cohort graduation rate, according to a U.S. Department of Education press release. Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) spokesman JC Considine told Patch in an email that Massachusetts has been computing cohort graduation rates since 2006, which are available on the DESE website. The preliminary state-reported data indicates …

Plaque Rededication for Three Wellesley WWI Soldiers

Lost plaque to be rededicated in Wellesley High School's 1938 room, in honor of three Wellesley soldiers who fought and died in WWI

Tomorrow, a plaque commemorating three Wellesley men who fought in The Great War (World War I) is getting pride of place at the High School--again. Selectmen confirmed at their meeting last Monday that the plaque would be rededicated at the High School. The ceremony is slated for 3:15 p.m. on Tuesday.  The three names on the plaque are Karl Cushing McKenney, class of 1907; Franklin Temple Ingraham, class of 1909; and Francis Wellington Whitney, class of 1909, who was also a resident of Needham. All three fought and died in WWI. According to YourTown Wellesley, the plaque originally hung in the 1907 High School building, but was lost for a while--likely during the 1938 move to a newer building. It turned up about 20 years ago, and was on …

What Does the Black & Red Say About Wellesley?

Patch consulted the work of a color theorist to find out what the school colors say about Wellesley.

Ever wonder what your favorite color says about you? How about the school colors?  The Wellesley Raiders will take on their Needham Rivals for the 125th anniversary game on Thursday, and they will be sporting Red and Black. If you're turning out for the 10 a.m. game in Needham, what do you think the uniforms will evoke on the field? According to Kate Smith, a color expert with Sensational Color Pro, colors can say a lot about a person, product, or company. Using Smith's pyschology of colors theory, Patch applies it to the city's choice of colors for the high school, youth sports and, well, just about everything! Wellesley: Black and Red Red–The color is considered a stimulant, and has a range of associations from good fortune to love. …

My Guess: When the football league was forming and Wellesley decided to join, they looked at the colors already used by other teams. Then they selected their colors from possible combinations not already used. A general consensus may or may not have been taken between the youth football organizers at the time. But black and red was what they arrived at.   more ›

HS Science Curriculum to Be Aligned Due to Low MCAS Scores

The town has published a report on recent MCAS output, and while overall Wellesley did well, science fell behind the mark.

The Wellesley School System as a whole did well on the most recent MCAS test, but because the town’s Science, Engineering and Technology high school scores fell short of expectations, there will be some adjustments made to the curriculum going forward. Wellesley had the lowest percentage of 10thgrade students to place in either “advanced” or “proficient” for science scores when compared to a cluster of like high schools. Wellesley was at 75 percent, which was nine percentage points lower than the second lowest scoring school in 10th grade science, Lincoln-Sudbury. School officials presented an overview of Wellesley’s MCAS scores at a meeting Tuesday night, in which they detailed how the high school science curriculum could shift in the …

This article is misleading. I believe the school district has made no decisions about realigning curriculum but is in a period of exploration where many voices will be heard before a decision of any kind is made. You should retract the headline and statements that make say this is a decision already made.   more ›

Great stats. of course this ranking probably does not consider that Wellesley likely serves more children from lower income households then the towns "above us". That is not to say these students do not excel but stats show us that scores are affected overall. I am proud of the tradition we have inthis town of supporting low income housing and the METCO program. Simple rankings do not tell the …   more ›

How Big Of A Problem Are Drugs/Alcohol At WHS?

New national study indicates that drug and alcohol use during the school day is a bigger problem than previously thought.

According to a new study by the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse, roughly 17 percent of American high school students engage in smoking, drinking or doing drugs during the school day. The study also indicated that approximately 86 percent of students indicated that they knew of classmates who abused drugs or alcohol during the school day. This was the 17th such study conducted by the NCASA. The group interviewed more than 1,000 students ages 12-17, according to an article appearing on Huffington Post. Perhaps more disturbing aspects to the survey included roughly 50 percent of the students indicating there was a place on there campus where students reguarly went to do drugs or drink alcohol. And about 44 percent said they …
