The magazine's 2013 rankings came out Monday.
On mobile? You can see interactive map here. Newsweek has ranked the high schools nationally, but the criteria they used leaves Wellesley High School off of their list. The school did rank in the top 250 nationally by US News, coming in at #163 nationwide and #7 in the state. The school district was also listed in Boston Magazine's top 20 list, coming in at #5. For its rankings, Newsweek sent out a survey to more than 5,000 high schools in the U.S., with about 2,500 schools responding in 2013. The Wellesley High School auction and casino night aims to raise some money for upcoming class of 2014 events.
The house always wins, and tonight the proverbial house is Wellesley High School. Casino Night and the Auction, happening at the high school tonight at 7 p.m., will benefit the current juniors, class of 2014 as well as an organizations called Birthday Wishes which provides birthday parties to kids at homeless shelters in Mass. The games, and silent auction, begin at 7 p.m. and continue until 8:50 p.m.--when some of the games will start closing down ahead of the live auction. At 9:45 p.m., the silent auction closes up and people start picking up their prizes. Between the High School, Middle School and Dana Hall, more than 100 students received awards in the 2013 Boston Globe Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.
[Update: March 5, 10:48 a.m.] According to a press release from the contest, the art pieces are on display at the State Transportation building. This information has been included. --- Wellesley was certainly well-represented in this year's Boston Globe Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, with over 110 students bringing in awards this time around. At Wellesley High School, 43 students took home 51 awards, including 13 Gold Key Awards, 13 Silver Key Awards and 16 Honorable Mentions, according to a spreadsheet released on the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards website, and a story on Boston.com's YourTown Wellesley. In memory of Hannah Randolph, students went without backpacks on Friday.
On Friday, kids at Wellesley High School were encouraged to leave their backpacks at home--to remember a friend The Swellesley Report says that Hannah Randolph, who died in a skiing accident last year, has been excited to tour the high school and leave her backpack at home. "No Backpack Day" was in tribute to her. The 15-year-old Wellesley teen collided with a tree, according to a CBS Boston report,while attempting to ski an expert trail at Copper Mountain resort Sunday. She was wearing a helmet, according to the report. In a letter from Principal Andrew Keough, she was described as “a gifted artist, musician, athlete, scholar, and most importantly someone who cared deeply for others." Via the Swellesley Report. Wellesley High School reports more marijuana found on students than in past years. Is this because of the state's looser laws?
Wellesley Police reported recently there have been more reports of students with marijuana in the high school than in past years. Needham High School has had a few incidents of bags found in the school, and last October, one NHS Student was found with 10 Bags of Marijuana. Although last year's bi-annual adolescent health survey found use at Needham High was down. One observation police have made is that there seems to be more openness about marijuana use among teens since it was decriminalized in Massachusetts. In November, Mass. also voted to approve the legalization of medical marijuana. Police report a higher number of incidents of students with marijuana at the high school than in past years.
The number of Wellesley High School students getting caught with marijuana is unusually high. Last week, Wellesley Schools held an assembly to talk about the recent rise in the use of pot among the student population. There have been six instances of students found with marijuana, according to a Swellesley Report story.
