A few weeks from retirement, a Wellesley officer runs into a burning building to check for occupants in last night's fire. There are no reported injuries.
An officer from Wellesley was the first on the scene--and inside the building--at a fire on Ashmont Street last night. Monday afternoon, around 4 p.m., Wellesley Police Officer Rick Weaver was driving to a traffic detail when he came upon the garage fire, according to a post on the Wellesley Police Department website. With the help of a passing FedEx driver, he forced his way into the house to check for occupants. He double-checked the house--looking inside a room located over the fire--and only after confirming it was empty did he flee to safety. Heavy garage fire at 24 Ashmont Road has been knocked down, but firefighters are still splitting open attic walls of the attached house to chase some flames.
[Update 7:47 p.m.]: Wellesley Fire Officials indicate that they are still investigating the cause of the fire. They also report that the first police officer on the scene went into the home to confirm that no one was home. There were no occupants and no injuries reported in the fire. [Update 4:28 p.m.]: Latest reports indicate that part of the fire has been knocked down, but that firefighters are still chasing some of the flames, and splitting open walls, in the attic of the nearly 1400 sq. ft. wood-framed split-level house. Firefighters fought a car fire yesterday afternoon on Wellesley Avenue.
Traffic was stopped on Wellesley Avenue yesterday afternoon after a crash, which caused a car to become engulfed in flames. Police and fire officials fought the car fire after 3:30 p.m. on Wellesley Avenue at Forest Street yesterday, according to tweets from @WPDPhoto. Wellesley Avenue was closed near the Wellesley Country Club for about 20 minutes following the crash, according to tweets. There were no injuries reported in the incident.

A report indicates the man fell on concrete steps on Washburn Avenue.
Medflight services are needed for an elderly man who has fallen on concrete steps on Washburn Avenue. According to reports, the 75-year-old male, fell five or six feet on concrete. There is a sizeable gash on the man's head. He reportedly lost consciousness but may have regained it. Medflight has been dispatched to Fiske Elementary School. Deputy Chief Jeffrey Peterson said yesterday’s storm was one of the more powerful ones he can remember.
A Benvenue St. resident returned to his home yesterday to lightning striking his house. Deputy Chief Jeffrey Peterson of the Wellesley Fire Department told Wellesley Patch that the owner of the home at 6 Benvenue St. pulled up to his house during the fierce late-afternoon storm yesterday just as a bolt was striking his home’s chimney. “The strike just exploded the chimney,” Peterson said. The lightning caused a fire in the attic of the home, and though there was extensive smoke and water damage in the house, firefighters contained the fire quickly and much of the damage is reparable, according to Peterson. Wellesley police and fire responded to the report of a "fireball" on a porch on Elmwood Road Friday evening.
Wellesley police and fire responded to an Elmwood Road home Friday evening around 9 p.m. after someone threw a bag of “flaming excrement” at the door. Fire Department officials had to pry the door a little to put out the flames, but no other damage or injuries were reported, according to Wellesley Police Sgt. Scott Showstead. The individuals who threw the bag were not found, Showstead said.
