Wellesley College Puts Barrett/Browning Love Letters Online

Sources report that the 19th century poets’ letters to each other will be made available today.

Wellesley College offered a Valentine’s Day gift to the internet today: a collection of love letters between two esteemed 19th century poets. The “Browning Collection,” a series of 573 letters between poets Elizabeth Barrett and husband Robert Browning, were published today via Wellesley College’s English Poetry Collection, according to the Boston Herald’s AP story and a school statement. According to the college’s website, the collection features “complete digitized versions and transcriptions of the courtship letters and their envelopes.” The collection was compiled in collaboration with Baylor University, home of the Baylor’s Armstrong Browning Library collection.

Valentine’s Day Means Business

Columnist Deb Robi writes about the Valentine’s Day effect for local businesses.

It's St. Valentine's Day, and while the religious calendars no longer observe this saint's day, lovers everywhere are expected to at the very least acknowledge one another with professions of affection, great and small.   This so-called "holiday" is great for businesses. Valentine's Day sales reached $17.6 billion last year; this year's sales are expected to total $18.6 billion, according to NPR.org, which published findings from market research firm IBIS World. Certainly Hallmark and American Greetings win the day.  In Wellesley, there are creative ways to spread the love to local establishments. While the perfect card for your honey may be scarce in the card section by now, there are things that you can do that "say it" simply.  You may …

Kiss for Free Food at Qdoba on Valentine's Day

Buy an entree, get another for nothing—if you kiss someone in line.

Customers at the Qdoba restaurant in Wellesley can get free food on Tuesday, if they don't mind a little PDA. The nationwide chain is bringing back a Valentine's Day promotion that, according to spokeswoman Ashley Cohen, tens of thousands of customers took advantage of in 2011. Anyone who buys an entree can get another for free—once they kiss a fellow customer at the cash register. It doesn't matter (to Qdoba) who it is. No coupon is necessary. The promotion is happening nationwide, though in Wisconsin, inexplicably, the second entree is 50 percent off, not free. The Qdoba in Linden Square is open normal hours, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., on Valentine's Day.

Cooking with Sheila: A Sweet Treat For Your Valentine

When you think of Valentine's Day, one thing comes to mind—chocolate. Try making one of these fudge recipes for your sweetheart.

"Don't wreck a sublime chocolate experience by feeling guilty." ~Lora Brody One of the easiest desserts to make has got to be fudge. I'm not much of a baker, so anytime I can create something good and chocolatey without turning on the oven I'm a happy girl. To this day, the fudge my grandmother used to make remains the best fudge I've ever eaten. I never tried to recreate it because I assumed it was too complicated for a novice like myself. Ironically enough, I recently learned that she found her recipe on the back of a Carnation Evaporated Milk can. Go figure. So here is that great fudge recipe. Create a sweet treat for your Valentine! Basic Chocolate Fudge Ingredients: Directions: Here are some suggestions for other types of fudge: Milk …

Valentine's Day Gift Ideas, Usual and Unique

Crib our gift list, and add your suggestions.

Two years ago, a dear friend sought my advice on what to get his girlfriend for Valentine's Day. His idea? A lamp. Because nothing says I love you quite like a lamp.... Don't get me wrong — I'm all about practical gifts. But when it comes to Valentine's Day, I believe sentiments or surprises should come from the heart, and be about the person you love, not about fulfuling their lighting needs. After a little bit of coaching, my friend settled on a necklace from a local artist. His girlfriend loved the gift, not only because it was pretty, but because it would remind her of him throughout the day, even when they were apart. Remember too, Valentine's Day doesn't have to be about spending a lot of (or any) money. The way to a loved one's …

The Best Love Song Ever Is...

Valentine's Day is approaching, and we're compiling a list of love songs.

It's Valentine's Day, and love is in the air... on the radio, in the coffee shops and maybe on your iPod. You know there's that one song that melts your heart every time you hear it. For me, it's "Over the Rainbow," sung by Israel Kamakawiwo'ole. I don't know what it is, but that song makes stop in my tracks whenever those first notes are played. A colleague of mine and I came up with this list of classic love songs: Is your favorite on our short list? If not, share it in the comments section below.
