Dunkin Donuts Approved for Fifth Wellesley Location

The Dunkin Donuts location on Central Street is coming between July and November. The Board of Selectmen also discussed two liquor license applications.

Wellesley will continue to run on Dunkin--another Dunkin Donuts location is on its way to the town. Representatives from the Dunkin Donuts location aiming to open at 98 Central Street came before the Wellesley Board of Selectmen at their meeting last night. With some discussion, the Board approved the application for a common victualler license unanimously. The Selectmen did add a condition that they schedule a study with the town's traffic engineers at Beta Engineering.  According to the Swellesley Report in March, the location will be a combination of Baskin Robbins' ice cream and the donut shop aims to open between the end of July and beginning of November.  At the same meeting, the Board of Selectmen approved a wine and beer license …

Baskin Robbins Heading for Wellesley

A one-stop shop for donuts and ice cream is looking to open in the former Neena's location, via the Swellesley Report.

Baskin Robbins and Dunkin Donuts are teaming up to serve up sweet treats in the heart of Wellesley. Wellesley's Design Review Board considered an application for signs for Baskin Robbins and Dunkin Donuts. The coffee and ice cream shop will be lobated at 98 Central Street, beneath the Wellesley Theatre Project. Dunkin'-Robbins has not yet gone before the Board of Selectmen to seek approval to open. According to the Swellesley Report, the combination ice cream/donut shop aims to open between the end of July and beginning of November.  See the full Swellesley Report story on their website.  The Baskin-Donuts location would be Wellesley's fifth. There are the two located on Route 9, near the border with Natick, 951 and 978 Worcester Street…

Gas Work Delaying Rockland Street Bridge Opening

Police say the bridge at Rockland Street will be complete, but not re-open until after works to repair the summer gas main break.

Your car will have to stay off the new Rockland Street bridge, but only for a little while longer.  Wellesley Police told Patch today that the bridge is nearly complete--and expected to finish today--although they do not plan to re-open it until early January.  According to Lt. Jack Polecki, the delay is to repair the gas main break at the end of August. A worker accidentally damaged the line during construction, which National Grid then capped on both ends, intending to return to fully repair the gas line at a later date. The repairs are necessary to maintain gas pressure along the gas main during the coming winter months. Rather than open the newly-completed bridge, only to close it again for these repairs, Polecki says the bridge will…

Rockland Street Bridge Looking at December Re-Opening

Bridge has been closed since January, was expected to re-open in September.

After closing to drivers earlier this year, the Rockland Street bridge may soon be passable again. The bridge was initially expected to re-open in September. The Massachusetts Department of Transportation tells the Swellesley Report that the bridge is expected to re-open by the end of the year.  At the Nov. 19 Board of Selectmen meeting, officials said during a traffic study report, that the goal is to re-open the bridge by mid-December. The study aims to streamline traffic lights along Washington and Linden Streets, and will re-examine the Rockland Street intersection after the bridge is open once again.  MassDot announced in May that the cost would increase, in part due to outdated information about the bridge abutments. Bridge …

WHS ‘You’re Not Special’ Speech Goes Viral

From local bloggers to international news outlets, teacher David McCullough's speech has gone viral.

Wellesley High School’s graduation was anything but out of the ordinary, that is until one teacher told students they were not special. On Tuesday, The Swellesley Report posted the speech by WHS English teacher David McCullough in which he tells students that despite years of coddling, they’re in fact “not special.” The post on Swellesley Report has been picked up by several major media outlets including Boston.com, Huffington Post, Yahoo! and other sites, according to Swellesley. The Swellesey Report even created a new post dedicated to the viral-ness of his original post. So what do you think? Did McCullough's speech cross the line or was it spot on?

One of my columnists wrote a commentary about the speech. We've had a couple of folks from Wellesley chime in. (Side note: I'm a Dana girl and love Wellesley!) http://lawrenceville-ga.patch.com/articles/you-are-not-special-and-you-are   more ›

Wellesley Wine Aficionado Sounds Off on Neighboring Town’s Consideration of Removing ‘Dry’ Status

The Swellesley Report had a special post from Robert Dwyer of Wellesley Wine Press about how changing times could change the status of a historically dry town.

There are no liquor stores in Wellesley. The town has numerous restaurants with bars, but you can’t pick up a 6-pack on your way home from work inside Wellesley’s borders. The same goes for Needham, but as wine connoisseur Robert Dwyer - who runs his own blog, The Wellesley Wine Press - writes in a Jan. 22 post on The Swellesley Report, that could soon change in Wellesley’s neighbor to the southeast. Dwyer’s post takes a historic and extremely local look at what it could mean if Wellesley went “wet.”  There has not been much talk about this at the town government level, though 2011 Town Meeting began the process of making some adjustments to liquor regulations as they apply to restaurants.

Wellesley's Week in Review

Your weekly roundup of news and events.

The School Committee met twice last week: once to vote for tightening safety measures and again to approve a consultant to assist with the search for a new superintendent of schools. Also, Wellesley Patch reported that school lunch debt is still at about $37,000. The School Committee also made their meeting agendas available via e-mail this week. Wellesley Police spokeswoman Lt. Swellesley: Jimmy’s Café to Close Jan. 31

The 24-year-old restaurant will close its doors at the end of the month.

A longtime Linden Street bistro will close this month. According to the Swellesley Report last week, Jimmy's Cafe at 151 Linden St. will close Jan. 31. Owner Bedros Kaya told Swellesley he decided to close due to “tough times.”

So what happens if you haven't used a Jimmy's gift certificate that was bought a few days before Christmas? They must have known they were closing the business, but they sold the certificate without any warning. That's unethical.   more ›
