Legislature Passes Housing Rights Bill Proposed by Newton Sen. Creem

Under the bill, victims of domestic violence and sexual assault who live in private housing can receive protections similar to those currently available to residents of public housing.

The Massachusetts Legislature last week unanimously passed a bill sponsored by Senator Cynthia Stone Creem (D-Newton), representing Wellesley, that aims to protect housing rights for victims of domestic violence, stalking and sexual assault.  Under the bill, victims who live in private housing would be able to break a lease with a landlord without financial penalty if his or her safety is in jeopardy, the press release said.  In addition, the bill forbids landlords to waive these rights in a lease and protects from discrimination against tenants, the press release said.  These are protections similar to those currently available under federal law to residents of public housing. “Maintaining and securing safe and affordable housing is often…

Sen. Cindy Creem Supports State Bottled Water Ban

Creem has proposed an amendment that would ban bottled water unless it is added to the current bottle bill.

Could the state soon follow in the footsteps of Concord's bottled water ban? According to a report on WBZ NewsRadio (CBS Boston), Senator Cindy Creem (D-Newton) has proposed an amendment that would ban the sale of water bottles statewide if bottled water is not added to the state's bottle bill.  Currently, the bottle bill only allows residents to return containers for malt beverages, carbonated soft drinks and mineral water.  Unless bottled water is added to the state's bottle bill, Creem's amendment specifies the bottled water ban would start after July 2013, WBZ NewsRadio reported. For a full report on this story, check out the news on WBZ NewsRadio/CBS Boston. Last month, the town of Concord made headlines when residents approved a town…

Sen. Cindy Creem Endorses Khazei for U.S. Senate

“I’m supporting Alan because he knows how to bring people from different backgrounds together to get things done,” Sen. Creem said in a press release yesterday.

Alan Khazei's campaign announced Tuesday afternoon that State Senator Cindy Creem (D-Newton) has endorsed Khazei's run for U.S. Senate. Creem is scheduled to campaign for Khazei at a house party tonight at the home of Newton Ward 8 School Committee member Margie Ross-Decter, according to Khazei's campaign. "I believe Alan’s the best person to represent us in Washington because his life has been about going around barriers to find new and innovative ways to improve the lives of ordinary Americans," Creem said in a press release issued today by Khazei's campaign. "Whether it was the time he co-founded City Year to create 15,000 jobs for young people or the time he led a coalition of citizen groups to get a bi-partisan group of Senators to …
