School Committee Adopts New Lunch Policy

The new policy would implement school activity-related penalties against students with delinquent lunch accounts.

Under the new policy, students with delinquent accounts are subject to penalties such as delay in report card issuance, prohibition from fee-based activities including athletics and other sanctions. Also under the new plan, students would rarely if ever not be served a lunch. Instead, students with a zero or negative balance will be offered an “alternative” lunch at a reduced price. The School Committee’s statement on the new policy: "The School Committee, Administration and Staff of the Wellesley Public Schools recognize that a healthy, nutritious meal plays an important role in the readiness and …

Students With Delinquent Lunch Balances Could Lose Privileges Under Revised Policy

The School Committee is considering punitive options for students and families who maintain negative lunch account balances.

Students with consistent negative lunch balances could find delayed report card delivery, bans on athletic activities and withholding of diplomas by the school system this year. According to a revised food service policy read at the School Committee’s Tuesday night meeting, students with delinquent accounts will be notified that the following actions may be taken if payments are not made by an agreed-upon date between the student’s family and the principal of the student’s school:  Students with a zero account balance will be provided with an "alternative" meal at a reduced price under the new policy. The meal would consist of a nut-free sunbutter sandwich, fruit and milk. School Committee member Suzy Littlefield said this was the progress…

Schools Incurred Additional $2K in Lunch Debt Last Year

The superintendent and School Committee will meet to discuss the new food service policy Thursday.
