Planners seeking feedback on future of Route 9, but already have some visions of green space and pedestrian access.
A foot-friendly, public transport-compatible route 9 could be in the cards--and your feedback could shape the future for the thoroughfare. The road could see a rise in traffic of about 40 percent, as commercial areas along 9 are set to expand by around 88 percent in the coming years, according to representatives from the Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC). In order to get ahead of that, the MAPC and MetroWest Regional Collaborative kicked off a series of meetings in May focused on how to develop Route 9 to deal with what is in store for Route 9. MAPC is hosting another public forum on Route 9's development on Tuesday, Dec. 4, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Raymond Callahan Senior Center entitled "The Future of Route 9: What Might Smart …

Boston Globe's YourTown presents a photo slideshow of Route 9's history.
Whether you call it Boylston Street, Worcester-Boston Turnpike, Ted Williams Highway, United Spanish War Veterans Highway or simply Route 9, the highway that splits Brookline in two is over 200 years old. The Globe pulled together a slideshow depicting some of the history of the road, from Brookline Village in 1915, through the disappearance of Framingham's Shopper's World and growth of the Natick Collection, to the former Omni Foods site in Newton. According to Westborough Patch Blogger Glenn R. Parker, Route 9 follows the 19th century Boston-Worcester Turnpike, which was used for agriculture and dairy farms. Wikipedia tells us that Route 9 or part of it, is named for Red Sox Hall-of-Famer Ted Williams, who wore the number nine on his …

Local officials host a series of meetings about reducing traffic by way of mixed-use communities along the secondary highway.
Route 9 is one of Massachusetts’ most historic roadways. It bisects the enitre state laterally, providing access to many of Massachusetts’ smaller towns and includes many shopping options along the entire road. However, it’s common traffic lights and single-lane areas can cause a gridlock nightmare for those who have to commute on the highway near the urban centers of Boston and Worcester. The Metropolitan Area Planning Council along with the MetroWest Regional Collaborative will begin a series of meetings May 22 on how to reduce traffic on Route 9 by way of a method called Smart Growth, which includes the strategic placement of mixed-use facilities – residential, commercial and retail in one location – along the highway. MAPC …

The Board of Selectmen denied Justine’s but approved another restaurant to open along Route 9 East near Natick.
Last August, the Board of Selectmen told a group of developers they could not open “Justine’s,” a restaurant at a building at 978 Worcester St., a high traffic section of Route 9 East near the Natick line. Their reasons for the denial of a necessary common victualler’s license were based on a view that the available parking at the tight plot was unsuitable for the proposed 135-seat restaurant. However, on Monday, the board approved a license for a different group attempting to open an 85-seat restaurant at the same location. This group made ample adjustments for parking and have no interest in controlling a residential building behind the property, according to the board Monday. The previous group wanted to manage that building as a …

As a new home owner on Rt. 9 this is sound like encouraging news. On a related note, I have toyed with the idea of starting some kind of initiative/awareness program to beautify our stretch of 9 through town. There are many dilapidated fences that are literally falling over. They're a real eyesore for everyone who has to pass them. Also, speaking of fences - I am currently researching what plants…   more ›
