Police and fire responded just before 8 a.m. to a four-car crash on Route 9 westbound, the intersection with Westgate Road, causing delays. Scanners report one injury and fluids spilled in the roadway. Three cars will be towed from the scene. SigAlert (formerly SmartTraveler) reports the left lane is blocked by the crash.

Expect more problems on Route 9 today. Wellesley Police are cleaning up an oil spill on the westbound side of the road near Kingsbury Street, according to department Twitter and Facebook pages. “Major traffic delay,” police say via social media. Earlier today, Massachusetts Department of Transportation had to correct a problem with the traffic lights at Route 9 and Overbrook Drive. The situation was corrected within a few hours.

Wellesley Police are investigating a serious one-car crash in which victims were injured and trapped inside the vehicle. A single car struck a median barrier on Route 9 at Route 128 before 4:30 a.m. Sunday, according to an announcement on the Wellesley Police website. The vehicle was extensively damaged, and police used the Jaws of Life to free the victims inside the vehicle, according to the announcement. Two of the four people in the car were transported to Boston hospitals. The vehicle was traveling eastbound on Route 9 when it struck the barrier and crossed over into the westbound lanes, according to the announcement. Police expect to file charges against the driver for multiple motor vehicle violations.

Route 9 is one of Massachusetts’ most historic roadways. It bisects the enitre state laterally, providing access to many of Massachusetts’ smaller towns and includes many shopping options along the entire road. However, it’s common traffic lights and single-lane areas can cause a gridlock nightmare for those who have to commute on the highway near the urban centers of Boston and Worcester. Early this morning, Natick Police attempted to stop a man driving a 2012 Toyota SUV on Route 9. The driver then fled west, leading local and state police on a chase through Wellesley which ended after the driver crashed into a State police cruiser and sideswiped one from Brookline. The driver, Ender Durgut, 39 of School Street in Watertown, was arrested and charged with various driving violations, including negligent operation, failing to stop, and leaving the scene of a crash. He is under police guard at Beth Israel Hospital for injuries sustained during the crash. Sudbury Man Recognized by Detective Arrested for Intent to Distribute Marijuana Benjamin Sia, 19, of Sudbury was arrested last week after police found three bags of marijuana and other paraphernalia in his car during a traffic stop. Wellesley Police detective Christopher Connelly pulled Sia over Feb. 29 on Weston Road. Connelly, while talking with Sia, observed three cellophane baggies. The baggies contained a total of 37 grams of marijuana, according to Wellesley Police records clerk Sue Morse. Sia was charged with possession of a class D substance with intent to distribute within 1,000 feet of a school zone. Last August, the Board of Selectmen told a group of developers they could not open “Justine’s,” a restaurant at a building at 978 Worcester St., a high traffic section of Route 9 East near the Natick line. Their reasons for the denial of a necessary common victualler’s license were based on a view that the available parking at the tight plot was unsuitable for the proposed 135-seat restaurant. However, on Monday, the board approved a license for a different group attempting to open an 85-seat restaurant at the same location. As a new home owner on Rt. 9 this is sound like encouraging news. On a related note, I have toyed with the idea of starting some kind of initiative/awareness program to beautify our stretch of 9 through town. There are many dilapidated fences that are literally falling over. They're a real eyesore for everyone who has to pass them. Also, speaking of fences - I am currently researching what plants… more ›
