Wellesley's delegates reported to the Board of Selectmen, speaking mostly about the Governor's budget proposal.
It could be a big year for the MBTA and local schools, depending on how the Governor's budget is received. Wellesley's delegates to the Mass. House of Representatives and Mass. Senate spoke to the Board of Selectmen at last night's meeting. The bulk of their report centered on the upcoming budget for the Commonwealth. Earlier this year, Governor Deval Patrick proposed a budget plan that would call for a $1.9 billion revenue increase, through a slew of changes to taxes, deductions and fees. Patrick's plan, which officials described as "ambitious," would increase funding to transportation, education and local aid. Sara-Lynn Reynolds will run in 2014 for the seat occupied by Sen. Richard Ross.
For the first time since 2010, a republican state senator with a few districts each in Needham and Wellesley may be given a run for his money. Since winning a special election to succeed Scott Brown as state senator, republican Richard Ross's term has renewed twice with no opposition. This will not be repeated in 2014 because at least one other person would like to represent the Norfolk, Bristol, and Middlesex District. Attleboro City Councilor Sara-Lynn Reynolds, who two weeks ago changed her voter registration status from independent to democratic, said Tuesday that she will run in the election. Before the state redraws local House, Senate and Congressional district lines, the Board of Selectmen has prepared a list of requests toward Wellesley’s role in the changes. At a meeting Monday, Selectman Owen Dugan, referencing a slideshow presentation, said the town will recommend to the Special Joint Committee on Redistricting to primarily be represented within a single House and Senate district and that Wellesley be included with geographically similar municipalities if the town is to be split. Currently, Wellesley is represented by Rep. Alice Peisch (D) entirely within the 14th Norfolk district, which also covers all of Weston and a small portion of Natick.
