Expect more problems on Route 9 today. Wellesley Police are cleaning up an oil spill on the westbound side of the road near Kingsbury Street, according to department Twitter and Facebook pages. “Major traffic delay,” police say via social media. Earlier today, Massachusetts Department of Transportation had to correct a problem with the traffic lights at Route 9 and Overbrook Drive. The situation was corrected within a few hours.

While the town grappled with a $100,000 school lunch tab last week, kids were out in front of Roche Bros. raising money for Japanese aid. On Tuesday afternoon the School Committee met to discuss ways in which it could go about collecting about $100,000 in overdue lunch tabs from families in Wellesley. On a dreary Wednesday afternoon, Schofield Elementary second graders stood in front of Roche Bros. selling cookies and brownies for proceeds that would go to the American Red Cross en route to Japan. The kids managed to raise $700 in two hours. Major cleanup efforts have been in effect since the March 6 spill.
Cleanup crews are continuing to make progress nine days after the high school oil spill. Hans Larsen, executive director of general government, told the Board of Selectmen last night that workers have located the pipe which leaked 400 gallons of boiler-room heating oil into a nearby stream March 6, and have installed an oil/water separator in the area to filter any remaining oil. “We believe we’ve broken the substantive link between the boiler room floor and the brook in terms of the flow of oil,” Larsen said. The next major piece of the plan will be to remove the pipe, which extends about 100 feet from the boiler room floor underground toward the stream, according to Larsen.
