Newton-Wellesley Hospital Bringing 'Healthy Habits' to Cancer Patients, One Meal at a Time

Healthy Habits Kitchen has partnered with the Vernon Cancer Center at Newton-Wellesley Hospital to provide healthy, home-delivered meals for cancer patients.

How much thought will you put into your lunch today? When it's mealtime, it's easy to take for granted what we choose to eat. But for many patients at Newton-Wellesley Hospital's Vernon Cancer Center, those three meals can sometimes be a daunting task. "We eat three times a day and we can just stop by somewhere and pick something up, but for a [cancer] patient who is at home and too tired to get up, it's a big deal," says Newton-Wellesley Hospital Dietician Christina Chiu.  As a way to help cancer patients tackle home cooking and sometimes difficult dietary restrictions, the Vernon Cancer Center at Newton-Wellesley Hospital has teamed up with Wellesley's Healthy Habits Kitchen to provide home-delivered meals to cancer patients. FUEL Promotes Newton-Wellesley Hospital Board Member, Gene Miller

New executive director for FUEL currently serves on the Newton-Wellesley hospital outside board.

  Families United in Educational Leadership (FUEL) announced their new Executive director earlier this week, Gene Miller, who sits on the Board of Overseers and the President's council at Newton-Wellesley Hospital. “At FUEL, we have grown exponentially over the past few years and incentivized hundreds of underserved families in Massachusetts to save thousands of dollars for college, and become knowledgeable about accessing higher education,” Miller said in a press release. New Center at Newton-Wellesley Hospital to Aid Sexual Assault Victims

The pilot program is being funded through federal grant money.

  Federal funding to the tune of $3.3 million will go to create a health center at Newton-Wellesley Hospital to better help victims of sexual assault, both locally and nationally. The Massachusetts Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Telenursing Center, which will be located at Newton-Wellesley Hospital, will provide 24-hour services to victims of sexual assault, according to an Associated Press report on the Boston Herald website.  The telenursing center will also offer consultation services to doctors and nurses around the country who don't routinely treat victims of sexual assault, the report says.  The grant money, from the U.S. Department of Justice, will help pay for equipment and clinical staffing, plus education and technical assistance…

Newton-Wellesley Hospital Restricting Visitors Due to Flu

The hospital is hoping to keep visitors at a minimum during the flu outbreak.

With a flu epidemic affecting much of the country, local hospitals are hoping to protect their patients by keeping visits to a minimum.  Newton-Wellesley Hospital has put in place a number of visitor restrictions to help limit the spread of the flu virus, according to the hospital's website. Newton-Wellesley Hospital's First 2013 Baby Born 12:08 a.m.

The first baby of the year born to Waltham parents at local hospital.

She may not be the first baby of the new year, but the first birth certificate marked Jan. 1, 2013 at Newton-Wellesley Hospital belongs to a baby girl named Ahaana. Born at 12:08 a.m. to mother Sameeta Bilgrami and father Prem Ramasamy of Waltham, Ahaana Prem weighed 6 lbs 15 oz. Newton-Wellesley Hospital spokeswoman Rachel Kagno says she is their first child, and was three days early. Per their custom, baby Ahaana takes her father's first name as her last name. Baby Ahaana was about eight minutes later than a baby on the Cape, who WVCB says may have been Massachusetts' first baby born in the New Year: baby Max Benjamin Pierre was born five seconds after midnight to mother Marie Meritus.

Needham Parents Welcome 12-12-12 Baby at Newton-Wellesley Hospital

Needham parents Jacqueline and Brian Soll had their first child on Dec. 12, 2012.

Needham's newest resident, Audrey Mae Soll, will have an easy birthday to remember.  Audrey was born yesterday, "12-12-12", at Newton-Wellesley Hospital to new parents Jacqueline and Brian Soll, of Needham. She weighed in at 7 pounds, 5 ounces and measured 20 1/4 inches long, according to Newton-Wellesley Hospital Spokesperson Rachel Kagno. Jacqueline entered Newton-Wellesley Hospital around 8 p.m. Tuesday and Audrey was born at 8:18 a.m. Wednesday, meaning Jacqueline was in labor for 12 hours, Kagno said. Jacqueline was one week overdue, as Audrey was expected on Dec. 5. Although the timing of Audrey's delivery wasn't planned, Jacqueline acknowledged "It's a cool date to have as a birthday!"

Newton-Wellesley Hospital Ranked No. 13 Locally By U.S. News & World Report

U.S. News & World Report published its list of top ranking hospitals around the country today.

Newton-Wellesley Hospital is ranked in the top 15 compared to 77 local hospitals in a U.S. News & World Report list published today. The 290-bed general medical and surgical hospital was ranked No. 13 in the "Boston metro area" category and No. 16 in Massachusetts. (U.S. News & World Report has mistakenly listed the hospital as having 189 beds, according to Newton-Wellesley Hospital spokeswoman Rachel Kagno). The hospital is tied with Winchester Hospital at 13th place in the category. Newton-Wellesley is considered “high performing” in the adult specialties of geriatrics, urology and orthopedics, according to the list. Massachusetts General Hospital came in as the No. 1 overall hospital in the United States.

Newton-Wellesley Hospital President to Step Down

Effective August 1, Dr. Michael Jellinek will no longer be at the helm of Newton-Wellesley Hospital.

Newton-Wellesley Hospital announced today that Dr. Michael Jellinek will step down as president of the hospital. According to a press release from the hospital, Jellinek will leave to focus on his position as chief of clinical affairs at Partners HealthCare System.  “I have completely enjoyed my work and am grateful to everyone at Newton-Wellesley,” Dr. Jellinek said in a statement. “All of us have worked hard to make this a special place and it will be very difficult for me not to be coming to Newton-Wellesley every day - not to see my many colleagues and friends. I am completely confident that our physicians, nurses and staff will continue our tradition of providing high quality, efficient and compassionate care to our community.”  …
