New State Medical Marijuana Rules Put in Place

New regulations will go into effect May 24.

New rules for the medical use of marijuana have been written into the commonwealth's regulatory code by the Massachusetts Public Health Council Wednesday, according to State House News Service report published on LowellSun.com. Among the new regulations are how much marijuana can be generally used by patients, the licensing procedure for medical marijuana dispensaries and how low-income patients can get access, according to the report. These regulations will go into effect May 24, according to the Sun. In November, Massachusetts voters approved a ballot measure that would allow doctors to prescribe marijuana as part of a treatment. Under the law, the state was operating under a 120-day window starting Jan. 1 for creating regulations for …

Warrant Articles on Medical Marijuana May Be Coming to Town Meeting

Warrant articles regarding marijuana dispensaries and public consumption may be on the spring Town Meeting warrant.

The fate of medical marijuana in Wellesley may be in the hands of town meeting come the spring. Nothing is on the books yet, but the Board of Selectmen is mulling over how to address the outcome of the Nov. 6 referendum on medical marijuana. The question of where to zone or place a dispensary--or whether to zone them out of town--and prohibition of marijuana use in public. Officials are expecting to make two separate warrant articles. In terms of zoning, the goal would be to restrict where in town a dispensary could be set up. The new law goes into effect January 1, but requires rules and regulations be set up by the Department of Public Health. Some towns and cities, such as Quincy, reportedly are already trying to line up regulations that would keep dispensaries out of their municipalities, which have proved troublesome in some of the nine states where medical marijuana dispensaries have been legal. What do you think? Is this a classic case of NIMBY (fine, but Not In My Back Yard)? Or do medical marijuana …

Letter to Editor: ‘Marijuana is Not Medicine’

In this Letter to the Editor, Wellesley’s Chief of Police Terrence Cunningham writes to vote no on Question No. 3, which would make it legal for medical marijuana dispensaries to open in Wellesley.

The following is a Letter to the Editor submitted on Oct. 22 by Wellesley Chief of Police Terrence Cunningham: On November 6, Massachusetts voters will be asked to decide whether or not to permit the growing, sale and possession of “medical marijuana” (Question 3).  If the initiative passes, 35 marijuana dispensaries will open across the commonwealth and people who claim financial and transportation challenges will be permitted to grow their own marijuana.    The Town of Wellesley, through the Board of Selectmen and the voters, has moved methodically and strategically regarding alcohol licensing regulations, the current regulations don’t allow liquor stores or bars to operate.  Ironically, should this ballot initiative pass a marijuana …
