Before Hurricane Sandy's full scope of devastation in New York and New Jersey was even known, 25 men and women from the Massachusetts State Police were on their way to assist those who had been displaced from their homes. "When I reached out to ask if the state police would be willing to field a group of 25 people, I already knew the answer," Undersecretary for Homeland Security and Director of MEMA, Kurt Schwartz said in a press conference in Framingham Monday afternoon. New Jersey called; Massachusetts answered. The state of New Jersey asked for help with devastation in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, requesting that nearby states send law enforcement officers to help keep peace and order in the hardest-hit areas of New Jersey. On Saturday, a detachment of 25 troopers from the Massachusetts State Police was selected and sent, reporting to Fort Dix to be sworn in as police officers. State police will set up a routine sobriety checkpoint for drivers in Norfolk County this weekend.
If you spot a state trooper camped out by the side of the road somewhere in Norfolk County this weekend, he or she may be doing more than just watching for speedsters. Colonel Timothy P. Alben, superintendent of the Massachusetts State Police, announced in a July 30 press release that a sobriety checkpoint will be established on an undisclosed public way in Norfolk County from Friday, Aug. 3 into Saturday, Aug. 4. Alben said the purpose of the checkpoint is to further educate motorists and strengthen public awareness to the need of both detecting drivers who are operating under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol and taking them off the road. Local police focuses on its annual initiative to enforce the "Click It Or Ticket" law.
With prom and graduation season, as well as Memorial Day weekend, and the start of the summer parties ramping up, law enforcement uses the time to enstate its enforcement blitz on the "Click It or Ticket" initiative. "The mobilization is part of a statewide effort funded by the EOPSS that consists of extra high-visibility traffic enforcement and public information," read a press release issued by the Massachusetts State Police. The 47-year-old suffered fatal injuries in the crash, police said.
Massachusetts State Police have identified the victim in an early morning rollover on Rte. 128 as a 47-year-old Manchester, New Hampshire man. The name of the victim, who died as a result of the accident, is being withheld pending notification of his family, police said in a statement Sunday. The rollover occurred around 7:18 a.m. on Sunday, when the New Hampshire man lost control of the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 pickup truck he was driving. The truck reportedly drifted to the left and off of the highway near Exit 21 on Rte. 128 in Newton, before crossing all travel lanes and finally leaving the road on the right-hand side, rolling over and coming to rest in the travel and breakdown lanes.
