MassBay Community College established a scholarship fund in memory of Krystle Campbell, the Medford native killed in the Boston Marathon bombing attacks April 15. The school announced the fund at her memorial service April 23. Campbell, 29, earned an associate degree in business administration from MassBay in 2005, was a 2001 graduate of Medford High School, and most recently an Arlington resident. Her grandmother told the Globe that Campbell had recently moved to Arlington, having spent the past couple of years with her grandmother in Somerville to help her through an illness. Mass Dept. of Higher Education release annual listing of students honored for academic and civic achievements.
Every year, one person from each of the state and community colleges is honored as one of 29 Who Shine. For MassBay Community College, that shining person is Victoria Lynn Woodard, a student who has served on many of the important committees at the school, including Student Government Association, and the Domestic Violence Coalition and the Human Services Club. According to the profile on the 29 Who Shine site, Woodard is moving on to Framingham State University to earn her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Human Services, and her ultimate goal is to open a recovery home for women in Framingham. A funeral for one of the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing last week held in Medford yesterday; Krystle Campbell was also remembered in Wellesley, as a graduate of MassBay Community College. Campbell graduated from the college in 2005, and was remembered at a memorial entitled "We are Boston." Dozens of faculty and staff turned out for a simple ceremony which began with the national anthem, and closed with a signing of "America, The Beautiful." "For those of us who were not her contemporaries at MassBay, we could know her simply by looking at her picture. Krystle's eyes were bright, engaging, caring, intelligent and direct." We take this time to remember, and to acknowledge the loss of one of our own, Krystle Campbell (MassBay Class of 2005).
The 29-year-old MassBay Community College graduate, Medford native, and Arlington resident was one of three people killed in Monday's Boston Marathon terror bombings.
Krystle Campbell, a 29-year-old spectator at the Boston Marathon, was one of three people killed in Monday's bombings. She graduated from MassBay Community College in 2005. The College will hold a memorial service for her on Monday, aty 2:30 p.m., during a ceremony entitled: "We Are Boston." The public is encouraged to attend, and first responders are invited in uniform. Campbell was a 2001 graduate of Medford High School and most recently an Arlington resident. Wellesley College makes the first liberal arts school to join the MIT/Harvard online venture, edX. MassBay Community College joined last month.
Wellesley is getting plugged in. Free online education is already on your computer, but soon course listings will include liberal arts education from Wellesley College. Wellesley College announced today that they are adding courses to edX, an online resource offering free online classes from Harvard, MIT and Berkeley. The WellesleyX program will be the first liberal arts courses on the site. EdX uses what are called massive online open courses (MOOCS), in which anyone with an internet connection can participate in a course without applying or or attending the courses in person. Gov. Deval Patrick was in Wellesley today to unveil a new grant that will award the local community college with funds to “enhance the first year experience for students.” MassBay Community College will get $300,000 via the Performance Incentive Fund, according to a statement from Patrick's office Tuesday.
