MWRTA Board Votes to Include Wellesley

The MetroWest Regional Transit Authority provides regional transportation alternatives, according to its mission statement.

Wellesley is the latest town to join the MetroWest Regional Transit Authority. The MWRTA Advisory Board unanimously voted in favor of accepting Wellesley’s request to join at a Monday night meeting, according to an e-mailed statement from Linda Murtagh, an MWRTA representative. “Wellesley is a nice addition to the RTA and completes the east side of the Authority,” MWRTA Administrator Ed Carr said in the statement. “It also opens up more interoperable opportunities with the MBTA.” Wellesley becomes the 12th community to join MWRTA since its creation in December 2006, according to the statement. This sets Wellesley on the path toward fixed-route bus service, which the town's Public Transportation Working Group hopes to be in place by 2014. …

Selectmen Approve Recommendation to Join MWRTA

Under the Public Transportation Working Group’s plan, the town would have MWRTA fixed route bus service by 2014.

The Wellesley Board of Selectmen voted Monday to move forward with a town group’s plan to join the MetroWest Regional Transit Authority (MWRTA), which will likely mean fixed-route bus service for Wellesley. While Wellesley currently uses the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority’s (MBTA) paratransit service called The Ride, as well as commuter rail service, town officials say the proposed move will simply create new options. Wellesley’s Public Transportation Working Group (PTWG) recommends that the town join the MWRTA to establish a fixed-route bus system, which will run throughout Wellesley. The system would ideally serve to reduce traffic and increase economic vitality while adhering to the town’s emissions goals, according to the …

Should Wellesley Join the MWRTA?

Tell us your opinion in the comments.

Wellesley' Public Transportation Working Group has recommended that Wellesley join the MetroWest Regional Transit Authority. If the Board of Selectmen decide to pursue this option, Wellesley could have intra-town bus service in the near future. Wellesley uses the commuter rail and paratransit service called The Ride, both services provided by the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority. Officials say The Ride will stick around indefinitely, but once MWRTA bus service begins, it will be incumbent upon the MWRTA to provide comparable paratransit service to Wellesley. How do you think joining the MWRTA will change things? Is this union going to be beneficial or somehow costly to the town?

Joining MWRTA Will Create Options For Town, Officials Say

Members of local Public Transportation Working Group say MBTA’s The Ride is not necessarily in question.

And while Wellesley currently makes use of the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority’s (MBTA) paratransit service called The Ride as well as commuter rail service, town officials say the proposed move will simply create new options. Selectmen Discuss Public Transit Possibilities

Nearly 60 percent of people in surveyed said they want MBTA Green Line access in Wellesley.

Members of several town boards and organizations have come together to begin to address interest in a more vibrant public transportation system in Wellesley. Selectwoman Ellen Gibbs presented the latest steps of the Public Transportation Working Group (PTWG) at a meeting June 20. The group’s purposes are multifaceted, but it’s primary objective is to answer the call for “a broader array of transportation alternatives,” according to the presentation. The PTWG has formed as result of the town’s 10-year comprehensive plan, established in 2007. One of the plan’s missions is to reduce traffic throughout Wellesley, by simultaneously producing options for locals beyond cars. “The town’s been studying this issue for many years…unfortunately there’…
