HS Science Curriculum to Be Aligned Due to Low MCAS Scores

The town has published a report on recent MCAS output, and while overall Wellesley did well, science fell behind the mark.

The Wellesley School System as a whole did well on the most recent MCAS test, but because the town’s Science, Engineering and Technology high school scores fell short of expectations, there will be some adjustments made to the curriculum going forward. Wellesley had the lowest percentage of 10thgrade students to place in either “advanced” or “proficient” for science scores when compared to a cluster of like high schools. Wellesley was at 75 percent, which was nine percentage points lower than the second lowest scoring school in 10th grade science, Lincoln-Sudbury. School officials presented an overview of Wellesley’s MCAS scores at a meeting Tuesday night, in which they detailed how the high school science curriculum could shift in the …

This article is misleading. I believe the school district has made no decisions about realigning curriculum but is in a period of exploration where many voices will be heard before a decision of any kind is made. You should retract the headline and statements that make say this is a decision already made.   more ›

Lussier on MCAS: Strong Across the Board Though Science Scores Lag

Superintendent David Lussier commented on Wellesley's MCAS scores this week.

After the MCAS scores were released Wednesday, Wellesley Patch asked Superintendent David Lussier to comment on how Wellesley scored. Below are his unedited comments e-mailed to Wellesley Patch Wednesday Afternoon: While we are still combing through the data, I can share some overall reactions. Also, it's important to note that we are monitoring both absolute attainment as well as student growth:   Attainment Our students' scores are consistent with our past performance in ELA [English Language Arts Composition] and Mathematics. ELA, in particular, remains an area of strength across grades. 99% of our 10th grade students at Wellesley High School were Advanced or Proficient in ELA. 98% of 10th grade students at Wellesley High school were …

I raised the critical need to revamp our STEM offerings with the School Committee, and am offering to organize a committee around this issue. There are serious problems with our curriculum that should be addressed immediately. I was told they are going to start discussing this during the Oct. 2nd meeting. I encourage everyone to come, let's make our voices be heard!   more ›

Where Wellesley’s MCAS Scores Stand

MCAS results were made available this week, here’s how Wellesley did as compared to the rest of the state.

The Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment Test scores were published and organized by the Boston Globe this week, and Wellesley earned high scores in English. The highest score came out of 10th Grade English at 98 points out of a possible 100. The town low came from fifth grade science with 53. The rest vary, but in all test categories each grade’s English score was higher than either math or science. Scores are all out of a possible 100 points, as ranked by the Globe. The Globe tabulated the scores by adding the percentages of students who scored "advanced or "proficient" in each category. Within the third through sixth grade, the Globe rankings are based on about 420 students per grade per category. In seventh, eighth and 10th grade, …

Parents Get Answers To Questions About the Schools

From cameras at the new high school to the lack of composting by Chartwells to Ruth Quinn Berdell's back vacation pay, the School Committee addressed an array of concerns.

The School Committee last night candidly answered questions from a roomful of approximately 50 parents, students and community members who quizzed the elected officials about an array of missteps that have plagued the department for the past several months. The meeting was scheduled at the suggestion of Paul Baier, a parent of an eighth grader, who started Concerned Parents of Wellesley last month in an effort to get answers from the elected officials about a series of problems including financial mismanagement in the business office, questions about hiring practices, food safety, air quality at Schofield and a grandfathered verbal agreement that allowed two employees to receive a total of $101,000 in unused vacation pay banked over more …

MCAS Scores Raise Philosophical Questions

Wellesley's science curriculum has a different focus than what is tested in the mandated exams.

MCAS results again this year show Wellesley students at all levels test well in English Language Proficiency but not as well in math and science at the lower levels. By the time those same elementary and middle school students reach high school, however, math and science scores improve. And according to Dr. Rebecca McFall, director of curriculum and instruction, there has never been a Wellesley student prohibited from graduating because they failed to pass the MCAS tests, which is a state requirement for graduation. There are a few factors that contribute to Wellesley’s relatively low performance in middle school science where the results from last year show just 41 percent of eighth grade students scored “advanced and proficient.” McFall …

Kudos to Becky McFall and Supt. Wong for not bowing to teach to the test in science curriculum progression. Unlike most school districts, WPS has maintained it's Earth Science in 9th grade. Thus puts our students out of sink with MCAS but gives them a better foundational education in science and particularly iin understanding current issues facing this planet we all call home. So BRAVO to to …   more ›
