Boys' Hockey Tops Braintree for 5th Win in 7 Games

The Raiders got 23 saves from goalie Zach Herbert-Burns and a late goal by Connor Darcey to hand the Wamps their first Bay State Conference loss.

Senior goaltender Zach Herbert-Burns kept Wellesley afloat long enough for Connor Darcey to stuff the game-winner inside the right post with 2:29 to play, and the Raiders overcame an early deficit to deliver Braintree its first Bay State Conference loss of the season, 2-1 Monday night at Babson Skating Center. With overtime looming, Darcey attacked Wamps netminder James Cox on the left side, then quickly slid behind the net and jammed a wraparound inside the opposite pipe at 12:31 of the third period. “I rushed it and got shut off at the end, so I wasn’t planning on scoring,” Darcey explained. “[I figured I’d] wrap it around, get a faceoff, then tie it up.” Instead of forcing a faceoff, Darcey provided the Raiders’ first lead of the …

Girls' Hockey Stays Unbeaten With Win Over Weymouth

Freshman Shanna Hickman recorded a hat trick to lead the dominant Raider offense in an 8-3 victory over the Wildcats.

Freshman Shanna Hickman scored twice in the first six minutes, part of an early offensive onslaught that produced a 6-0 Wellesley lead by the 3:56 mark of the second period, and finished with a hat trick to lead the Raiders past Weymouth 8-3 Wednesday night at Babson Skating Center. Wellesley (4-0, 4-0 Bay State Conference) now has scored at least four goals in every game this season and has outpaced opponents 24-8 overall. The Wildcats (0-5, 0-4 Bay State) scored late on Wellesley's third-string goaltender to avoid a second straight shutout; they fell to Dedham 6-0 on Dec. 21. Wednesday's game was Wellesley's first in two weeks, but the Raiders looked as sharp as ever, despite the long layoff. Sophomore forward Sarah Guarente tallied her …

Boys' Hockey Suffers Season's First Loss

Defending Bay State Conference champion Needham blanks the Raiders, 3-0.

In a clash between reigning division champions, Needham proved it is still the class of the Bay State Conference with a decisive, 3-0 victory over Wellesley Wednesday night at the Babson Skating Center. Sam Nickles, a senior defenseman, scored just 3:24 into the contest then potted a demoralizing, short-handed goal at 8:02 of the second period to lead the Rockets (2-0), who captured last year's BSC and Carey Division titles with a perfect, 16-0 league mark. J.P. McHale tallied the other goal for Needham, on a second-period power play. The Raiders (2-1), last year's Herget Division champs, were blanked after scoring 11 goals in their first two contests of this season. "We'll get lots of positives out of our effort," Wellesley head coach …

Hockey Rink on St. James Property Likely Wouldn't Offer Hometown Discount

Recreation Officials Wonder Whether WYHA Would Pay Premium for Local Ice

Parents already pay big money for their children to lace up skates for one of the Wellesley Youth Hockey Association's travel teams--$1,235 per player, in most cases--and as the town considers purchasing the St. James the Great Church site, local recreation leaders are wondering whether a new hockey rink on the land would inspire those parents to pay a little more. "I know parents would love to have a home rink," said Julie Perry, WYHA's vice president, who is about to take over for President Bill Darcey. "Right now, we have contracts with other rinks but it's piecemeal. We kind of get whatever ice time is left over. So you can't say to a team, 'You always practice Tuesdays at five.'" Wellesley Youth Hockey's roughly 500 players practice …
