Fmr. Wellesley Superintendent Named to Interim Spot in Lincoln-Sudbury

Bella Wong appointed to replace the departing Lincoln-Sudbury Superintendent, Scott Carpenter.

The Lincoln-Sudbury school committee made their pick for a new leader public--and they went with Wellesley. Bella Wong, the former Wellesley Public Schools superintendent, was appointed to replace Carpenter Tuesday morning on an interim basis. She is expected to start July 1, pending successful negotitation. "Bella Wong is a good fit for LS for many reasons, most notably her knowledge of LS by virtue of her having been a teacher at the school, her understanding of key policy issues affecting public education, and her experience advocating for capital projects," said Nancy Marshall, chair of the School Committee. "We look forward to working with her very much." The School Committee will undertake a search for a permanent superintendent/…

Fmr. Wellesley Superintendent Finalist for Interim Lincoln-Sudbury Post

Interviews will be held Monday and Tuesday at Lincoln-Sudbury.

The Lincoln-Sudbury Regional School District is looking to fill an empty seat, and they are looking to Wellesley in the final three.  On Thursday, the interim search sub-committee of the Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School Committee, tasked to select finalists for the school's search for an interim superintendent/principal, voted to recommend three finalists for this position, and advanced the District's search toward its next stage.   "We had a terrific pool of interested candidates to draw from and we are excited about these finalists we have recommended," said sub-committee chairman, Kevin Matthews. "We are confident they each have the experience, expertise and qualifications needed to help our school continue to perform at the …

Full Day Kindergarten Appears Unlikely For September

While Superintendent Bella Wong may still recommend the change, the steep price tag may make it a hard sell in this difficult budget year.

With an estimated price tag that could top $500,000, a change to full-day kindergarten seems stalled for this year. While School Committee Chairman Suzy Littlefield at a Wednesday meeting would say only that the committee will consider the issue if Superintendent Bella T. Wong decides to include the change in her recommended budget for the coming year, it appears unlikely the measure would be approved when an override of Proposition 2 1/2 is on the table to simply pay for level services. And even if the School Committee did decide to move forward with the additional expense in this difficult budget climate, an override vote will not be taken until May.  That means parents would not know until then whether funds to pay for the additional …

Kato, Povich to Lead Search for New Superintendent

Residents call for more changes in the business department, and start the discussion about qualities needed in the next leader of the town's public schools.

School Committee members K.C. Kato and Ilissa Povich will head the committee charged with finding a new superintendent, and both said last night they are committed to hearing from the public and making the process as open and inclusive as possible. The two said they will spend the next two weeks speaking with as many people as possible with experience hiring a superintendent, and will report back to the School Committee with more details about the process and make-up of the full search committee at its meeting on Nov. 29. School Superintendent Bella T. Wong last Thursday announced her resignation effective at the end of the school year. The School Committee has sole responsibility for hiring her replacement. The search committee will be …

Wong Resigns Effective at End of School Year

In a letter to faculty and staff, Superintendent Bella T. Wong cites ongoing problems in the "operational protocol" of the department with undermining her ability to advocate for the schools.

School Superintendent Bella T. Wong resigned her position Thursday, effective at the end of the school year, according to a letter emailed to administrators, faculty and staff. A similar letter to parents was emailed Thursday afternoon. The resignation comes after a tumultuous year for the school department, which began last March with news that the school lunch account was in arrears by more than $100,000 and included a professional review showing sloppy accounting practices in the business office and most recently questions arising over hiring practices after a middle school custodian was charged with stealing computers and jewelry from the building. In a year when the town’s financial situation is precarious and passage of an override …

I didn't know you could make a second income off of unused vacation time. Here I am working two jobs... With the leaving of Bella Wong this should provide a great opportunity to examine what is going on behind closed doors. The former employees of the Food Service department did a great thing by letting the public/Wellesley residents know about how the administration was operating. That was just …   more ›

Thefts Changing the Culture at the Middle School

Students now have to worry about their things, says School Committee Chairwoman Suzy Littlefield.

Suzy Littlefield said Tuesday night that for her the saddest thing about someone breaking into an art cabinet and stealing students’ jewelry projects and the year’s supply of silver is that it has changed the culture at the Middle School. “Now kids have to worry about it. Where should I leave my instrument? What should I leave in my locker? It is extremely frustrating and it really saddens me for the kids,” she said. Superintendent Bella T. Wong said the spools of silver, valued at “several hundred dollars,” have been replaced so the jewelry class can continue, but called the loss of the students’ art projects devastating. “When it’s personal like that, it’s really devastating,” she said. She said she and school administrators are working …

Wong: Reporting of Middle School Thefts Has Been ‘Conservative’

Superintendent Bella T. Wong issued a letter to Middle School parents and staff about the recent thefts.

In the wake of several recent inquiries about thefts at the Middle School, Superintendent Bella T. Wong issued a letter to parents and staff Oct. 18 in which she writes reporting of the incidents has been “conservative.” In the letter, Wong does not specify what has been stolen from the Middle School or when, but writes that the school has been subject to "several varied incidents of theft these past months." “All of us in the Central Office and Middle School have been deeply troubled by each instance and have been frustrated by the incessant recurrence,” the letter states. Sunday, The Swellesley Report published excerpts from a letter by Middle School Principal Jamie Chisum which addresses Columbus Day weekend jewelry thefts at the …

What security measures is Ms. Wong talking about? Is it just teachers locking their doors? And what does "conservative" mean? Are there more thefts that the townspeople don't know about? ($20,000.00 + Jewelry thefts + It seems like a significant amount of money is being stolen. I feel bad for the teachers.   more ›

Wong Gets High Marks From School Committee

Wong's intelligence, leadership skills and ability to attract top talent were among things cited in the public performance evaluation.

Superintendent Bella T. Wong last night was given a stellar performance evaluation by the School Committee which again praised her depth of knowledge, her ability to attract and retain excellent teachers, principals and administrators, leadership skills and ability to stay focused on what is best for the town’s schoolchildren. Similar to the public portion of her evaluation delivered last year, School Committee members gave Wong high marks for her commitment to education. “You are extremely hard working and incredibly dedicated,” said School Committee member Ilissa Povich. “...I think above everything else I appreciate how deeply you care about every single student and every single staff member. It comes through in everything you do.” The …
