The Lawrence Academy left-handed pitcher signed a letter of intent with Wake Forest, but has entered the MLB draft.
Maxwell Tishman, a hard throwing left-handed pitcher at Lawrence Academy, is in Major League Baseball's draft, which ends today. Tishman, who is originally from Wellesley, signed a letter of intent with Wake Forest, according to Lawrence baseball coach Chris Margraf, but he – along with team standout and best friend Rhett Wiseman – are still in the running to be selected by a major league ball club. “Major League teams pretty much know he’s going to college,” Margraf said. Tishman lead Lawrence Academy to a 10-5 season and shared pitcher of the year co-owners in the Independent School League. He was also a finalist for league Most Valuable Player. Tishman was mentioned in an ESPN.com blog about Wiseman, who attends BB&N and is likely to …

Lets go Raiders baseball!
Each morning, Wellesley Patch presents “5 Things You Need to Know,” a collection of announcements, events, reminders and odd little ditties to help you organize your day. 1. The Board of Selectmen discussed the latest issues regarding the St. James the Great property acquisition last night. 2. Special Town Meeting to determine whether the town will purchase the property is June 13. 3. The School Committee will meet tonight. The meeting technically begins at 7, but the committee will be in executive session until about 7:30, when the agenda begins. 4. The Wellesley H.S. Raiders baseball team will play the Sharon Eagles in the first round of the M.I.A.A. tournament today at Sprague Field at 4 p.m., weather permitting. 5. At last night's …

Callum Borchers writes about how the coach of a local legion baseball team attempted to dupe the league – and Wellesley Patch – by using a ringer.
The kid wearing jersey No. 2 stepped to the plate with the game tied, 5-5. One on, one out in the top of the sixth inning. Pitch. Swing. Gone. A two-run blast over the left-center field fence. A home run that gave Weston’s American Legion baseball team an insurmountable lead in a 13-7 road win over Medford on July 2. The dinger highlighted a superb game by No. 2: He doubled, scored twice, knocked in three runs, and played a sterling center field. He was, quite simply, the best player on the field. He was also, it turns out, an ineligible athlete playing under the name of someone four years younger, at the direction of the team’s head coach, Justin Miller. Later, after self-reporting the violation to Zone 5 Commissioner Len Noce, Miller, …

Wellesley falls 7-1 to Newton.
For the Newton “C” baseball team, a little familiarity went a long way. The first time through the lineup, Newton failed to capitalize on its scoring opportunities. Not so the second go-round as Newton exploded for six runs in the third stanza en route to a 7-1 semi-final victory over Wellesley in the Lou Tompkins Tournament of Champions. “That happens a lot,” said Newton coach Terry Sack. “You have to get used to a pitcher. And sometimes it is because the kid is a lefty or because he throws off-speed stuff that they’re just kind of getting use to.” Newton will have a chance to claim the championship when it takes on Medford 9:30 a.m. Sunday at Belmont High School. “It’s what any team starts off the season looking to do,” said Sack. “Only …

The Wellesley South Little League team will take the field against Andover National tonight in Taunton in pool play of the state finals. Wellesley South will play likely just after the Boston Red Sox conclude their series against the Kansas City Royals at Fenway Park. The Sox are having an offensive season like none other; routinely putting up double digit runs per game. The Wellesley South 12 year olds have put together a similar run toward the states, piling on the runs throughout the summer. Baseball was intended to be a close game of low scores and timely hits. Though many feel high scoring baseball is exciting, old-school fans prefer a tightly-contested ball game where late inning decisions can make or break a team. When it comes to …
