Ming Tsai, chef and owner of Blue Ginger, spoke to Bentley graduates about success in business.
Celebrity chef, successful business man and now, commencement speaker. Ming Tsai, chef and owner of Blue Ginger, spoke to Bentley University graduates of the McCallum Graduate School Saturday. Here are a few selected quotes from the commencement address, prepared by Bentley’s News and Communications Department: He challenged graduates to find success by first setting out to make a difference. … If your goal is to be successful and that is your only goal …I don’t think you’ll get there … Your goal has to be: how can I serve, how can I change the world, how can I leave my mark? Every one of you can leave your mark. By the way, if your goal is to change the world, you will be a success. Citing life lessons of Chinese philosopher Chuang-Tzu, …

Superintendent Bella Wong issued a letter to parents this afternoon.
Another piece of school business for next year has been taken care of. Mark Ito, the current chair of the Middle School English Department, will be the school’s principal beginning next year, according to a letter to parents from Superintendent Bella T. Wong today. As of May 11, the decision was down to two finalists: Ito and Peter Cohen, principal at Stony Brook Middle School in Westford, Mass. “It became abundantly clear through the process that Mark has earned the deep respect of the school community for his intelligence, thoughtfulness, and leadership as a teacher and administrator,” Wong said in the letter. Ito will replace Jamie Chisum, who served as interim principal this year.

A council at Wellesley Middle School surveyed students this spring.
Of the 800 Wellesley Middle School students who took this spring’s homework survey, just over half agree that current homework expectations are appropriate. This figure highlights the latest Middle School Homework Survey, administered this spring by the Middle School on-site council and interim Principal Jamie Chisum. Other highlights: A vast majority of the student sample – 93 percent – said they can understand their homework without help, and 78 percent of student respondents said they never receive help from a parent. Ninety-four percent of the 272 parents sampled said their student never needed help with homework. Survey results were not broken down by grade. Chisum wrote in the survey there is the possibility of a disconnect between …

Luke Day coached in Wellesley from 2002 to 2010, and after a short hiatus from basketball, he’ll return to the court next season in Brookline. Day was hired to takeover the Brookline High School program replacing Mark Fledor who resigned after this year’s season, according to the Boston Herald. Last year, Wellesley Patch published a two-part video interview with Day a year after he had resigned the Wellesley coaching job.

State health officials want to put restrictions on school bake sales to discourage unhealthy eating habits, but will this hurt fundraising efforts?
Massachusetts state health officials recently recently approved regulations that would prevent bake sales from being held during school and in the 30 minutes before and after school to discourage unhealthy eating habits. Gov. Deval Patrick has backed down on the regulations after criticism from parents and organizations that say putting restrictions on bake sales would negatively impact fundraising efforts for the schools and nonprofit groups, according to USA Today. Legislation passed in 2010 will still require schools serve healthy snack options in the cafeterias and limit sugary foods. In today's poll question, we're asking: Do you think Gov. Deval Patrick should enforce the bake sale ban to help encourage Massachusetts youth to have …

Wellesley’s new superintendent is at heart a Bay State educator.
Some call Austin, Texas the liberal haven of the south. It’s a beautiful southern city with dusty streets and a sheik rock and roll nightspot never out of eyesight. It’s not exactly how one would describe Wellesley, Mass., but, according to Wellesley’s new school superintendent David Lussier, there are comparisons to be made. “It’s actually a lot like Wellesley,” he says from the Texas capital. “People are passionate about their schools. It’s why I’ve been here six years.” Lussier, currently the executive director for the Office of Educator Quality in the Austin, Texas Independent School District, certainly brings translatable skills. The Wellesley School Committee saw fit to unanimously vote him into the position Tuesday, and there is …

Research generally shows that about as many parents want more homework as there are parents who want less, with most parents satisfied with what the teachers assign. The problem is that homework, unlike schoolwork, takes place in a setting where there are no bells to tell the student when he is done. The pattern of support for homework generally follows the bell curve since the lack of time …   more ›
