The Board of Selectmen hope to “swap” land with the Natural Resources Commission in order to come to an agreement over parking in the area.
The town will move forward with a new senior center at the old American Legion site, which leaves town boards and committees to once again sort out the parking situation at the tight plot. Selectwoman Terri Tsagaris said there are a few options on the table for the now vacant plot at 496 Washington St. at a Monday meeting. The town could reclaim spaces at Needham Bank, which are currently being used by high school staff until the school’s parking lot is built. Spaces on Washington Street could be devoted to the site during specifically allotted hours. Also, there’s Morton Park, located directly across from the site and next to the Wellesley Police Department, which is held by the Natural Resources Commission, Tsagaris said. Two members of …

Wellesley has seen an 86 percent increase in participation since the renewable energy program began in 2008.
Wellesley is among the greenest towns in the country. Board of Selectmen chair Barbara Searle said at a meeting Monday Wellesley is third in the country in terms of voluntary renewable energy signup among residents. She said there were 1,135 renewable energy accounts signed up for the program, based at the Municipal Light Plant, as of last week. This figure is good for an 11.4 percent participation rate in Wellesley. “It is really terrific,” she said. Searle said this makes Wellesley first in Massachusetts and second in New England in terms of voluntary renewable energy participation. The program has grown 86 percent since it was implemented in 2008, when there were 600 signups, according to Searle. The program is in an effort to reduce …

WBUR’s Bob Oakes interviewed Wellesley College economist Phillip Levine on his work, which will be published in the Journal of Economic Perspectives tomorrow.
Teen birth rates are higher in communities with more “income inequality,” according to research performed out of Wellesley College. Bob Oakes, anchor for WBUR’s “Morning Edition” newscast, interviewed Wellesley College economist Phillip Levine, who sought to determine why teen birth rates vary drastically depending on location in the United States. Levine, along with research partner University of Maryland economist Melissa Kearney, found that poor teens in an area of high income inequality are more likely to give birth for a variety of reasons. “What really seems to exacerbate the problem is when you’re poor and you live in a place where there’s a great degree of income inequality,” Levine told Oakes on WBUR.com. “So if you’re poor in a …

Celebrity chef, successful business man and now, commencement speaker. Ming Tsai, chef and owner of Blue Ginger, spoke to Bentley University graduates of the McCallum Graduate School Saturday. Here are a few selected quotes from the commencement address, prepared by Bentley’s News and Communications Department: He challenged graduates to find success by first setting out to make a difference. … If your goal is to be successful and that is your only goal …I don’t think you’ll get there … Your goal has to be: how can I serve, how can I change the world, how can I leave my mark? Every one of you can leave your mark. By the way, if your goal is to change the world, you will be a success. Citing life lessons of Chinese philosopher Chuang-Tzu, …

We report the odd police-related news from the region.
Mario Kart? A man called Hopkinton Police this week to report that another driver threw trash out of his car window. The caller said he honked his horn, and in return, was given the finger. An officer spoke with the alleged litterbug, who said he had just tossed a banana peel. Unlike the video game Mario Kart, this did not result in any nearby cars spiraling out of control. It's free and comfortable; why wouldn't you wear it? A woman called Milford police to report her daughter was discharged from the hospital, but had gone to a relative's workplace still wearing the hospital gown. She reported her daughter might still be walking around Main Street with the johnny. I know this fox, and he never acts this way. A Northborough resident …
