Katherine Lee Bates Elementary School, located on Elmwood Road, is named for the American songwriter who's most famous for writing the song "America the Beautiful." The school, established in 1953, is currently populated by more than 350 students taught by 17 teachers. Principal Michael Spencer is proud to work with the school's active Parent Teacher Organization (PTO), which maintains a supplemental school Web site. The school participates in the state's METCO (Metropolitan Council for Educational Opportunity) program, which invites urban students to attend schools outside their district.
