Gearing Up for "The Game?" The Oldest Football Rivalry in the Country Continues
The tradition continues 131 years later...
If you’re new to Wellesley, you’ll soon find out about the legendary football game between Wellesley High School and Needham High School that cannot be missed. Labeled the “oldest public school rivalry in the country,” dating back to November 30, 1882, today, a commemorative boulder dedicated to its hero, Arthur J. Oldham, marks the spot where the game began (boulder is located between the duck pond near the Town Hall and the police station).
Legends have been built upon stories of great individual heroics, feats of daring adversity, and even comic events. The chronicles of the history of Wellesley football continue to be filled with stories of the extraordinary events and are worth checking out when you have the time. For now, enjoy Thanksgiving Day dinner with family and friends, but don’t forget to attend “The Game,” after all, it’s a home game here in Wellesley this year (Thursday, November 28, 2013 from 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. at Wellesley High School).
