Former Boston Mayor Thomas Menino has been diagnosed with an advanced form of cancer that has spread to his lymph nodes and liver, the Boston Globe reported Saturday

The cancer was reportedly discovered by Menino's physician, who was examining the 71-year-old for a chronic weakness in his legs. The former mayor's doctors have not been able to find the source of the cancer, having suggested they never will, and said surgery is not currently a treatment option, according to the report.

Menino began chemotherapy treatment earlier this month at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and is expected to undergo three more sessions at two-week intervals, according to the report.

Meninno was a bad ass for 20 years. It is sad to hear his retirement at 71 is marked with advanced stage cancer. He should be able to enjoy himself.. Mumbles.. Always Mumbles.. Even friggin Governor Cellucci had to leave die early after serving Boston. Italian Boston FOREVER!! Boston Strong, even with the Embarrasment of 911 .
