Bay State Conference Looking to Add Three Schools, Third Athletic Division

Wellesley is among 12 schools currently part of the Bay State Conference, split into two divisions – Carey and Herget.

The Bay State Conference is exploring the possibility of expansion for the 2014-15 school year.

Currently, The Bay State Conference consists of the following 12 schools (SY 2012 population included) – Wellesley (1353), Braintree (1529), Brookline (1770), Dedham (774), Framingham (2040), Milton (987), Natick (1301), Needham (1522), Newton North (1871), Norwood (1063), Walpole (1120), and Weymouth (1988).

The 12 schools are divided into two divisions (Carey Division and Herget Division), based on enrollment, for championship play and for seasonal play at the junior varsity and freshman levels.

The mission of the Bay State Conference shall be to promote the best interests of secondary education; to nurture cooperation, professional growth and good fellowship among its members, and to secure uniform regulation and control of inter school participation in activities throughout the association to the end that these activities shall be an integral part of the educational program.

The purpose of expansion is to create equity in competition relative to school size/population. Additional factors to be considered when reviewing applications include: educational mission, location, facilities and sport offerings for scheduling purposes.

Ideally, expansion would consist of welcoming three schools to The Bay State Conference and the addition of a third division. With a third division, The Conference is focused on adding two small schools and one large or medium sized school to balance each division.

Schools that meet the criteria listed above are welcome to provide a letter of interest to The Bay State Conference for review. Within the letter of interest, please provide data and facts as to why your academic institution would be compatible to existing Bay State Conference member schools.

All letters of interest should be received by Sept. 15, 2012. Upon review, selected applicants will be notified and meet with Bay State Conference Administrators and Athletic Directors for an interview.
