Avery Esdaile took a job as athletic director for Boston Public Schools.

The following is from Wellesley College:

Wellesley College Associate Athletic Director Avery Esdaile has announced that he will resign from his position to take over as the Athletic Director for Boston Public Schools (BPS). Esdaile will begin his employment with BPS on April 7th.

“Avery's departure is bittersweet,” said Wellesley Director of Athletics, Bridget Belgiovine. “I am very proud of his well deserved career opportunity, but we will miss his presence and role in our department and at Wellesley College.”

Avery Esdaile leaves Wellesley after spending 12 years in the department, 11 as the Assistant Director of Athletics. He was promoted to Associate Athletic Director in fall of 2013.

“Wellesley is an amazing place with talented students and a dedicated group of staff and faculty,” said Esdaile. “I have been fortunate to work great people the past 12 years as a part of the Wellesley community.”

At Wellesley, Esdaile oversaw athletics scheduling, operations for all home events, and also did extensive work with the contest management and team travel budgets. In addition, Esdaile coordinated team travel arrangements for each of the Blue's 14 varsity sports.

Aside from his event and budgetary responsibilities, Esdaile also served on several department committees. As a member of the PERA Advisory Committee, the Athletics Committee and the Facilities and Operations Committee, he was part of a collaborative effort that worked to enhance department policies surrounding athletic philosophies and operations.

“Avery is a consummate professional with an incredible commitment and appreciation of what it takes to support student athletes and colleagues,” added Belgiovine. “His team approach, demeanor, work ethic and "Blue Pride" will be missed. Wellesley's loss is a tremendous gain for the students, coaches and administrators involved in athletics at Boston Public Schools.”

Esdaile also had several campus-wide commitments at Wellesley. He served as the chair of the Wellesley Administrative Council Advisory Committee, which is a committee responsible for fostering greater collaboration among Administrative Council committees.  In past roles, he served as the co-chair of the College's Compensation and Personnel Policy Advisory Committee (2007-2010) that is charged with advising the President and other appropriate officers on all college administrative procedures and policies. Additionally, he was a member of Wellesley's Budgetary Advisory Committee during the 07-08 academic year.

“I have learned a great deal through my work as part of the PERA team and this has helped to prepare me to take this next step in my career,” said Esdaile. “I am thankful for all of the experiences and relationships that I have established during my time here, all will be missed.”

Outside of Wellesley, Esdaile has served on a number of committees for the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC), most recently as the liaison for the women's soccer coaches group. He has twice represented Wellesley as the Director of the NEWMAC Women's Swimming and Diving Championship and has also served as tournament director of numerous Seven Sisters Championships.  In May of 2010, Esdaile served as the Tournament Director for the first ever NCAA Softball Regional hosted by Wellesley College.

Esdaile is a January 2012 graduate of the NCAA “Pathway” Program.  The intensive year-long program, with a total of 10 participants from all three NCAA Divisions, prepares senior level athletic administrators to become Director of Athletics as their next career step.  The program focused on personal and professional leadership development, critical thinking and exposure to day-to-day situations and issues through professional mentors.

“I am excited and honored to be working with Boston Public Schools and I look forward to contributing to part of the student's education experience through athletics,” added Esdaile. “Boston Public Schools recognizes that athletics serve a role in helping students develop, finding a sense of self, and gaining confidence. We want to make sure that every student in the district has access to athletics should she or he choose to participate."

Prior to being hired at Wellesley, Esdaile spent two years in the Athletics Department at Yale University. As the assistant for athletic facilities and varsity sports operation, he worked in event management as well as football and basketball operations for the Bulldogs. Esdaile also organized practice schedules for all varsity teams and practice bus transportation for fall and spring sports.

A New Haven, CT native, Esdaile completed a Masters of Science in Management of Sports Industries at the University of New Haven in May of 2008. He previously earned a bachelor's degree in Sociology from Wesleyan University in 2000, where he was a four-year starter and letter-winner on the men’s basketball team.
