Elementary Schools to Undergo Redistricting

Due to overcrowding, Wellesley school officials have decided to redistrict the elementary schools.

According to Boston.com, Wellesley superintendent David Lussier sent a letter to parents saying that the process has already begun and plans should be presented as early as January. Redistricting could be implemented in fall 2014.

At the Oct. 8 School Committee meeting, Lussier reviewed school utilization percentages and classroom sections. Cost implications relative to transportation issues were also discussed. He then presented the administration’s conclusions that reconfiguration did not yield a more significant short-term ability to free up space versus redistricting. Lussier recommended proceeding with a targeted redistricting strategy aimed at providing short-term space relief to some of the elementary schools as well as achieving a more efficient overall use of these buildings.

The School Committee unanimously voted to authorize the administration to establish a committee to develop a redistricting recommendation. Patti Quigley was nominated as the Committee’s representative on the newly formed redistricting committee.

There will be an opportunity for community feedback, and a final recommendation to School Committee by December or early January.

Wellesley is home to seven elementary schools; Katharine Lee Bates Elementary, Joseph E. Fiske Elementary, John D. Hardy Elementary, Hunnewell Elementary, Schofield Elementary, Sprague Elementary and Upham Elementary School.
