The town is the leading Massachusetts community when it comes to tree conservation.

Wellesley has once again earned the Tree City Award thanks to the town's public tree management program for the 10,000 town-owned trees in town.

"This [Tree City USA] award is a testament to the Town's long tradition of valuing trees and open spaces and we are honored to once again be its recipient," Natural Resources Commission Executive Director Janet Hartke Bowser said on the NRC website.

As part of their efforts, the NRC and DPW will work together this year to plant more than 100 shade trees around town.

"Some of these will be to replace trees lost to age, disease and road construction, while others will be planted to reduce erosion, screen areas, or simply to increase the aesthetic value of the landscape," the website says.
