Pick the MBTA's New Map

See the changes coming to every station in the system.

By Roberto Scalese

The T has been expanding over the last few years, making it's current system maps increasingly out of date.  Riders can now vote for the new map the service will use to help you get in, across and out of town.

"With many new projects opening (new Fairmount Line stations and next year’s opening of Assembly Square Station) in the coming months -- and many more in the pipeline (Green Line Extension, South Coast Rail and Silver Line Gateway) -- the MBTA will need to modify and redesign system maps," read the statement from the MBTA about the contest. "The MBTA may use the map with the most favorable public response from this contest as the new map."

Earlier this spring, the authority put out a request for new map designs. They sorted through the entries and came up with six finalists. Anyone interested can go and vote for their favorite on the T's survey page.

And if transit maps or proper graphic design is your bag, be sure to check out the other submissions from the spring contest. Some of the more interesting entries use time tables, knitted maps and an actual, to-scale geographical map.
