Suspect With Warrants Captured on Cedar Street

The following information was supplied by Wellesley Police Department. Where arrests are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

During a routing commercial property check Tuesday, police caught two suspects trespassing and allegedly trying to steal scrap metal.

Arrested were Donald Morse of Dorchester and Dennis Reed of Lynn.

At approximately 3:25 a.m. Jan. 21, officer Dennehy was conducting security checks on commercial properties in the Cedar Street and Route 9 area.

"Wellesley police officers typically check on properties prone to break-ins several times during the evening and overnight hours," said police officials in a press release.

Dennehy noticed a pickup truck parked in the rear of a commercial property, located on the ramp from Cedar Street to Route 9 east. He was aware that the truck had not been parked at that location earlier in the shift, and proceeded to investigate. The truck was parked in an unlit section of the property, and not easily visible to traffic passing by.

Immediately, Dennehy located a male attempting to hide from view on the passenger side of the vehicle. The male suspect gave conflicting stories as to why he was located in the rear of a commercial property at 3:30 a.m.

"The male finally admitted that he and the driver were seeking scrap metal to take from properties and resell," police said. "The male was very elusive as to the name of the driver of the truck, and where he was presently located."

Sergeant Spencer and officers Poirier, Fritts and Wagner arrived a short time later to assist. These officers immediately noticed multiple syringes on the ground next to the truck, and items associated with the use of illegal narcotics.

The driver of the truck never returned to the scene, apparently having fled upon the arrival of Dennehy. During the course of the investigation that ensued, officers were able to determine the name of the suspect who had been driving. The suspect had a revoked license, as well as three outstanding arrest warrants, including one for burglary.

Spencer requested a K9 search dog from the Norfolk County Sheriff Office be called to the scene to assist in the search of the driver. Spencer was not only concerned about the arrest of a wanted person, but also concerned that the suspect might succumb to the extremely cold temperatures. The temperature was approximately 5 degrees with a sub-zero wind chill factor during the incident.

When deputy sheriff Reynolds and K9 Egon arrived on scene, Wagner was assigned to search the area with the dog. Meanwhile, Dennehy made contact with the property owner and determined that the truck and the occupants were trespassing on the property.

As the search continued for over an hour, Poirier subsequently located the suspect emerging from the backyards on Cedar Street, attempting to flee from the K9 Egon and Wagner. Poirier, Wagner and Fritts confirmed the identity of the suspect, Donald Morse of Dorchester, and placed him under arrest along with Dennis Reed of Lynn.

Both were arraigned in Dedham District Court, and Morse is being held pending the outcome of his arrest warrants.
