K-9 Recovering After Being Injured by Robbery Suspect

With the help of K-9 officer Blitz, police officials were able to capture the suspect who robbed a Wellesley Bank Sunday. However, the dog did not escape the incident unscathed.

On Dec. 15, at 1:54 p.m., the TD Bank located at 999 Worcester St., Wellesley was robbed. The suspect passed a note to the teller demanding money. The suspect was photographed by bank surveillance cameras during the course of the robbery and was eventually identified as Brian Kalil.

Detectives from the Wellesley Police Department’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation along with the FBI Violent Crime Task Force, Massachusetts State Police and the Norfolk County Anti-Crime Task Force tracked 32-year-old Kalil down in his parents' home in Quincy Thursday, Dec. 19.

Investigators surrounded the house and asked Kalil to surrender. Kalil did not respond to repeated requests to surrender. Investigators also determined from family members that Kalil was indeed inside the house. Investigators learned that Kalil may possibly be armed with a firearm.

The Metropolitan Law Enforcement Council SWAT team then proceeded to enter the house and conducted a slow and methodical search of the house. During the course of the search, which involved robots from the State Police and K9 search dogs, the SWAT team made their way to the top floor of the home and a remote attic area. A Plymouth County Sheriff K-9, named Blitz was deployed to search the remote area near the eves of an attic.

Blitz is a 4-year-old dog that works with Plymouth County Sheriff Assistant Deputy Superintendent Ken Ballinger.

Blitz began his search of the area. He immediately located Kalil hiding behind several objects. Kalil refused to surrender, and then attacked and fought the dog. During the course of the struggle, Kalil threw Blitz down a set of stairs.  Blitz, despite being injured, continued to try and subdue Kalil, while members of the SWAT team moved in. Kalil continued to violently resist being taken into custody by the SWAT team, but was placed under arrest. He was removed from the house at 10:45 p.m.

Kalil was visibly injured from fighting with the K9 and was transported to a Quincy Hospital for treatment.

Blitz was injured by Kalil, suffering a  puncture wound, cuts, lacerations, and bruises to his face, nose and chest area. Blitz is recovering from his injuries and will return to duty after he heals up. Kalil will be charged separately in Quincy for assault and battery on a police dog for injuring Blitz.

After being treated in Quincy, Kalil was transported to the Wellesley Police Department after midnight Dec. 20 and booked. He was initially held on $100,000 bail, and then was transported to the Dedham District Court for arraignment. After arraignment before a judge, Kalil was held without bail.
