Icy Roads Lead to Multiple Crashes Sunday Morning

Freezing rain, low temperatures made travel dangerous.

Freezing rain and slick roadways led to dozens of accidents across the state Sunday morning, including in Wellesley.

Hunnewell Street was closed between Oakland and Cedar Street due to an overnight traffic crash.  The crash severed a pole, causing major damage. The driver of the vehicle had minor injuries.

Due to the amount of damage to the utility pole, crews from Wellesley Municipal Light Plant and Verizon are expected to be working all morning and possibly through the early afternoon to repair the damage.  A detour has been set up around the traffic crash.

Some side roads in Wellesley are covered in black ice due to freezing rain.  Sanders are treating the roads, but police ask drivers to use caution this morning.

As of 10 a.m., Massachusetts State Police were still responding to dozens of accidents on Rte. 290 Westbound, near Exit 14 in Worcester. Since 6:45 a.m. Sunday morning, icy conditions caused more than 70 cars and three tractor-trailers to crash. Thirty people suffered minor injuries.

Vehicles involved in those crashes are being removed and placed in nearby parking lots, according to State Police. The Worcester Regional Transit Authority assisted removing vehicles and getting drivers off the roadway.
Roads throughout the state continue to be treated, as freezing rain is expected to let up around 11 a.m.

The Lowell Connector was also closed this morning for 45 minutes after icy conditions caused multiple crashes. That roadway has since reopened and the road has been treated.
