Obituary: John W. Hartley, Vice President for Finance and Development at Wellesley College

John W. “Jack” Hartley, 93, passed away Oct. 10, 2013 in Webster, Texas.

Jack was born in Douglas, Ariz. on St. Patrick’s Day, March 20, 1920, to Merle L. and Neal E. Hartley. He grew up in Douglas until the Hartley family moved to Phoenix.

Jack attended Phoenix Union High School, and matriculated to the University of Chicago. Jack enlisted in the United States Navy and became an aviator, flying transport seaplanes in both the Pacific and Atlantic.

Upon leaving military service, Jack earned his MBA degree from Stanford University and started a career in finance, initially with a commercial manufacturing firm, then transitioning to institutes of higher education. Jack served as comptroller of the Claremont Colleges in Southern California, the financial vice-president of the State University of New York in Albany, and finally as the vice president for finance and development at Wellesley College.

Jack retired to Mesa, Ariz. in 1985, and became a Texan in 2008, living in the Clear Lake area of Houston. 

Jack is survived by his son John and his wife Elizabeth; and his nephews George and Jim, along with their wives Cindy and Judy. Extended family members include Liz’s daughter Lorrie and her husband Ponder, and their children Lily and Zachary, and Liz’s mother Alice.

Interment is arranged for at Greenwood Memory Lawn in Phoenix, Ariz.
