Obituary: Grant H. Gray, Assistant Treasurer at Wellesley College

Grant H. Gray, 90, of Cumberland, R.I., passed away Oct. 29, 2013.

He was the husband of Barbara Joy (Rustigian) Gray to whom he was married for 61 years.

Mr. Gray was born to the late Harry and Satenig (Juskalian) Gray in Cranston, R.I. and had lived in Cumberland for the past 53 years.

He served in the United States Marine Corps in the Pacific Theater during World War II and was honorably discharged in 1946. He was a D-Day H hour veteran of the Iwo Jima campaign and he earned the Bronze Star with the Combat V for evacuating a wounded comrade to the beach under heavy enemy fire. His other decorations include the Presidential Unit Citation.

Upon his discharge, Mr. Gray went on to develop a successful business career including developing his own bandage factory in the late 1940s. He completed his college degree from Clark University and did extensive postgraduate work at both the Rhode Island School of Design and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

He worked for over 20 years for Brown Brothers Harriman in Boston and in 1975 he formed Grant Gray and Company, Boston, engaging in investment advising and innovative use of new technologies. He was also a partner in a number of successful joint venture operations including Hunter Associates.
Mr. Gray served as an advisor to the Parker Foundation and was an assistant treasurer for Wellesley College.

He served for many years on the Cumberland 4th of July Parade Committee, serving as Grand Marshall in 1970. He was active in the Community-Ites and the Cumberland Grange, both of Cumberland. He was a lifetime member of SS. Sahag & Mesrob Armenian Apostolic Church, Providence.

In addition to his wife Barbara, Mr. Gray leaves his son, Gary G. Gray and his wife Eileen of Cumberland, R.I.; his daughter, Priscilla J. Gamache and her husband James Moorhead of Wickford, R.I.; his seven grandchildren; his 11 great grandchildren; and his three nieces. He was preceded in death by his brother, J. Harry Gray.

His funeral and burial, with full military honors, will be private.
