Wine Made in Massachusetts? Are You Nuts?!?

Yes, I am being totally serious. It turns out that there are many, many, fine wines produced right here in Massachusetts. While I’m familiar with some of these, like Westport Rivers Wines or the excellent fruit wines produced by Nashoba Valley Wineries, I was a bit taken back by the broad range of wines produced right here in our fair state (commonwealth?). When I was contacted by Peg Mallett the Market Manager for Wayland Winter Farmers’ Market I promised that we’d work with her to get some exposure for this weekend’s event.

Here’s the deal.

Saturday, Jan. 26, the Third Annual Massachusetts Farm Wineries Day is featuring nine Massachusetts farm wineries. Ever since Gov. Deval Patrick signed the law in August of 2010, allowing state wineries to participate in "agricultural events," they have been included in our Summer and Winter farmers' markets. The statistics from the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources report, are truly impressive. In 2011 alone, sales of wine exceeded $500,000, with 34,280 bottles sold, and farm wineries collectively attending farmers' markets!
