Ordering online – are Women better than Men?

Ordering online – are Women better than Men?

Sitting at home the other day (one of my few days off since the launch of Metro West Wines) I was watching a rerun that in all honesty was not catching my full attention. Bored and a little restless, I was about to start on the ever expanding “Honey Do List” when out of the corner of my eye, I caught my wife approaching the dining room table with her laptop.

Guys if you’re like me, you’ve become accustomed to seeing a never ending slew of UPS boxes at the front door in ever increasing numbers from Brands like Zappos, Talbots, and the ever popular Neiman-Marcus. In fact, it’s become a bit of a game between my wife and me to see just how many transiting boxes are arriving, compared to an almost equal number of boxes set up in the foyer waiting to be returned.

Whenever she’s questioned, I am always presented with the same response. “No, I am not keeping all of them. See, these are being returned!” So, with a bit of curiosity and a little fear, I decided to move to the dining room to take a closer look. With hands a flutter and fingers pressing keys with the dexterity of a sushi chef, I proceeded to watch my wife skillfully navigate sites and pages of sites without the slightest hesitation or lack of direction. The occasional “ohh” and “ahh” was muttered and without skipping a beat, credit card numbers were entered and with a final keystroke, items were purchased and her laptop was closed. I was amazed at the amount of purchasing which could be accomplished in such a short time! Surely I was in the presence of a professional shopper.

It was at this moment, she noticed or should I say, acknowledged my presence. I felt obligated for the good of all mankind to delve into this experience with her and ask a simple question “Did you find everything you were looking for?” A simple “eh, not really” and a dash to the kitchen to open a bottle of wine was her response.

It was at this moment that a light bulb went off in my head and a revelation filled my consciousness. The joy of online shopping is not in the act of the purchase, but in the anticipation of the arrival of the purchase. Because of today’s return policies, women can feel every day is that special me "gift" day, with minimal financial consequences.  After all, a purchase returned is a reversal of a charge on a credit card.

When she was asked about my revelation, my wife quizzically looked at me and initially gave every indication that I was insane. Something most husbands are accused of nearly every day I assume. But as she poured her second glass of wine, a coy smile came over her and my revelation was confirmed. Online shopping, according to my wife, makes her feel special, makes her feel glamorous, makes her feel pretty. And if the cost to make her feel special is a few extra boxes around the house on a weekly basis, well, then guys, it seems that it is worth it. After all, with Valentine’s Day rapidly approaching, those few extra boxes might just make it a day worth remembering ...

As always, with every post, we invite your comments, thoughts and general ideas. Ladies, did we hit the mark with this analysis, or as my wife would say “Don’t you have a Honey Do list to get to?”
