Volunteer Drivers Program in Need of Help

The Wellesley Council on Aging is seeking volunteer drivers.

The Volunteer Drivers Program was created for the convenience of older clients. There are several transportation options for Wellesley residents, but they are not all available at the same time for the same destinations. Using their own cars, volunteers provide rides to those age 60 and older who cannot drive.

“Both drivers and passengers enjoy the camaraderie of fellow Wellesleyites,” said Lois Camberg, program coordinator. “Drivers love to feel that they are helping their neighbors. Both drivers and passengers say that they meet very nice and interesting people. Comments made to the Coordinator include such words as remarkable, interesting, cool, very nice, awesome! Volunteer drivers feel lucky to have met the passengers.”

Camberg noted that there is always a need for drivers due to the growing program. Drivers are available to take requests for rides 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, and can offer rides 24/7 if they are available. Drivers make their own schedules.

The program is web-based. An email message is sent out each night to all drivers listing the rides that are needed. Drivers just click on any ride they want to provide. They also check voicemails every few hours and call prospective passengers who want to register for the program or registered passengers who want to request a ride.

“It's easy and fulfilling,” Camberg said.

Destinations are within Wellesley and towns contiguous to Wellesley and are for both social and medical reasons. Stops might include the Boston Sports Club, food pantry, Council on Aging, hair salons, doctors appointments, church. However, the program has a special focus on encouraging seniors to get out and have fun.

Camberg said that potential volunteers should enjoy the company of seniors and be a safe driver. The program has a wide variety of drivers, both male and female of all ages. Drivers are also required to have a CORI check, provide copies of current insurance coverage, car registration and have a valid drivers license.

“Since its inception in February of 2011, the program has provided more than 2,000 rides, adding up to 15,000 miles and 1,500 volunteer driving hours,” Camberg said. “It is a neighbor to neighbor service that fills a need for passengers and provides much satisfaction for drivers.”
