GoFundMe Thursday: Help Rodah and Tom Get Home

Dr. Roseanna Means is seeking help to send two homeless senior citizens back home to Kenya to be with their family.

Rodah, 85, and her husband Tom, 90, have suffered from cancer and arthritis. They have spent the past 12 years without a home in Boston. Dr. Means, of Women of Means, wants to take Rodah and Tom home. However, they are too frail to travel alone; they need a doctor's care to make sure they get to their destination safely.  Dr. Roseanna is giving up her vacation to take them.

Using GoFundMe.com, Dr. Means hopes to raise $20,000. This will cover the costs of travel, medication and help them build a house in Kenya. So far, $350 has been donated by three people in eight months.

Dr. Means founded Women of Means in 1999 to improve the lives of women who are homeless or marginally housed through quality health care, education and advocacy. From 1990 to 1998, she worked for a program that operates health clinics for the homeless. According to the Women of Means website, she observed that homeless women were underrepresented at the clinics and learned that using traditional health care access venues, even when staffed by doctors trained in caring for the homeless, is overwhelming for women impaired by exhaustion, mental illness and fear. Consequently Dr. Means founded Women of Means, sending volunteer physicians into shelters to provide care where the women feel safest.

Women of Means is located at 148 Linden St., Suite 208, Wellesley. For more information visit http://www.womenofmeans.org/.
