The Wellesley Community Center is home to Wellesley Neighbors Arts and Crafts Fund Raiser, this Saturday, November 9 at 10:00AM until 4:00PM. This show is open to the general public and should be a fascinating exhibit for all.
Ruth Treitman and other local
artists will present their creations at “Artwork and Heirlooms” to benefit
Wellesley Neighbors.org (WN). Her handmade silver
jewelry is sold at Clever Hand Gallery and from home shows to benefit Juvenile
Diabetes Research and other charities. Live musical performances and refreshments will also be provided
by WN members.
”I started at an adult education class, 18 years ago, and
found I loved creating silver ornaments and learning new techniques,” Ruth
recalls. “I made pieces for family and friends but finally decided to test the
retail market.”

She was much influenced by an archaeological book on the
weaving of pure gold 6000 years ago. Its author led a workshop on weaving in pure
silver. “That workshop was the pivotal point in my jewelry making,” Ruth says.
“I was hooked on chain-making.” Yet another workshop introduced her to PMC
(precious metal clay), which is made of very fine particles of silver in a
moist binder. It can be worked like clay and once a piece is shaped, it is
fired in a kiln until the binder burns away and the silver particles are fused
together.
“In silver or gold, I
encourage special orders because they often cause me to create new designs,
which can lead to a new collection,” Ruth says. She looks forward to meeting old and new
customers on November 9 and invites them to enjoy the other participating
artists. All are members or friends of Wellesley Neighbors, a social and
educational organization for seniors in Wellesley and adjoining towns. For more
