The Future of Wellesley: A Roundtable Discussion with Candidates

To the Editor,

Your readers are encouraged to come meet future Town board members and Town Meeting Members at our League’s 75th anniversary year Candidates Night, to be held February 28th at Sprague Elementary School.  At 7:00 pm we will hold a special celebratory reception in recognition of our anniversary. At 7:30 we will begin our program by honoring retiring board members, many of whom your readers know, and all candidates to the stage to participate in a new form of candidates night, a roundtable discussion.

“The Future of Wellesley: A Roundtable Discussion with Candidates,” will give incoming board members the opportunity to explore with one another -- and the audience -- broad issues facing the Town. The candidates will come sit together on stage, talk about their backgrounds and the reasons they have decided to run, and then address issues identified by the League and the audience that cut across boards. Issues will range from budgeting, transportation and infrastructure to senior services and the value of civic volunteerism. Our moderator, from a neighboring League, will help guide their discussion.

Through this new League format, we expect to have a dynamic, engaging conversation that will help voters get to know the Town’s future board members. We also believe this approach will give everyone the opportunity to explore large issues with which the Town is grappling.  We are pleased that WCAC-TV will cover the program and that Roche Bros. has agreed to serve as our major sponsor.

For questions or additional information, please contact Jean Childs (childsjj@verizon.net) or Irene Flint (ireneflint1@gmail.com), co-chairs of the program, or myself.
