Brandeis-Wellesley Orchestra, Neal Hampton, Conductor

The Brandeis-Wellesley Orchestra is composed of students, faculty, staff, and associates of Wellesley College and Brandeis University. Uniting the standards of excellence associated with Wellesley and Brandeis, the orchestra brings inspiring performances of the great orchestral literature—past and present—to a new generation of musicians and audiences.

The fall concert will feature a performance of Amy Beaches' Gaelic Symphony, the first symphony by an American woman. Beaches was an important turn of the century Boston composer along with Arthur Foote, George Chadwick and John Knowles Paine. The symphony draws from traditional Irish-Gaelic melodies, tapping into a rich heritage that had been part of the American musical mainstream for at least a century, and by the 1890s, was assimilated into the new genre called popular music.
