Question of the Day: Is Late Night Ice Cream Necessary?

Tell us your opinion in the comments.

When J.P. Licks' brass sat before the Board of Selectmen in spring, they pushed for a during the summer months. After a few meetings, the board granted them permission to stay open late, thus making them the each night.

While we experience a heat wave of what feels like epic proportions, it’s no doubt ice cream businesses are booming, especially ever-popular J.P. Licks. But is this Wellesley Square ice cream store's business booming between the hours of 11 p.m. and midnight?

There is nothing for young people to do in town at that hour, and a few late night places would give them a safe and legal option... As a kid growing up in Framingham, we had a handful of late night places to talk, and it is a safer, well-lit, public alternative than sneaking into town property after dark, which is what they do now.

Has JP Licks said whether it is doing well at that hour? Personally, I find ice cream is ESPECIALLY important between the hours of 11pm & midnight! ;-) I think the town should encourage victuals in this area. At night, when the shops are closed, parking is a cinch & it keeps the town from looking like we rolled up the sidewalks.

It's aout time Wellesley had a place that closed later than 9:30. We're not just a sleepy bedroom community, having several colleges, and other young--and maybe not so young--people that want to have somewhere to have a snack and get together later in the evening. Hopefully this is the beginning of a trend. (If you keep it open, they will come, to paraphrase another saying). Roche Bros. in Natick is open till 11, but they close here at 10. Why? Hopefully the new Whole Foods, will be open later. Let's try to be a little more cosmopolitan!
