Letter to the Editor: Outdoor Recreation Activities Begin

Director of Recreation Jan Kaseta writes in about summer events.

The following is a Letter to the Editor submitted last night by Jan Kaseta, director of the :

It’s that time again….Summertime! Who delivers summer, on a picnic platter, better that the Wellesley Recreation Department?  We’ve got a summer of fun events lined up for Wellesley families and we want you to consider this an open invitation to join in the fun.

First up is the opening of Morses Pond Beach. The gate opens on Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend at 10am. The beach will be open Saturday, Sunday and Monday from 10am-7pm. We will be open the following weekend and then open full time on June 6. Picnic tables, grills, a playground, waterslide, swim lessons, the open water swim (June 16), beach volleyball, kayak, canoe, paddle boat and stand up paddleboard rentals make Morses Pond Beach your hometown oasis. It’s “The Beach Within Reach”.

Our popular kicks off with the second annual, “School’s Out For Summer” youth concert on Tuesday, June 19 (rain date June 20). Local high school musicians, Awesome Express, will perform at the Town Hall Green at 7pm. Our concert series will continue throughout the summer on Wednesday evenings from 7-8:30pm with the following performers: June 27, The Reminisants; July 11, The John Penny Band; July 18, HELP!; July 25, Brass Attack; August 1, Island Fantasia and the grand finale, August 8, The Glamour Girls.

The fun doesn’t end there! Wait until you see outdoor movies on our big screen. On July 12 at Warren Park, we’ll show “The Smurfs” and on August 2 at Morses Pond, “Dolphin Tale”. Movies begin as soon as it gets dark; bring something to sit on, snacks and a flashlight.

We’ve got two other special events, both at Warren Park. Come see a demonstration by the “Flying High Frisbee Dogs” at 6:30pm on July 24 and finally, join us for our annual Britt B Family Day on August 7 from 3:30-7pm. Britt B Day includes giant inflatables, free ice cream and games brought to you by Knucklebones.

All of our special events are free to the public and are made possible by our generous sponsors. Our sponsors are businesses and individuals who support what we do and just plain love seeing people have fun. Our sponsors are too numerous to mention here, but at each event, we will give out flyers listing the donors. We encourage you to support these local businesses and to thank the individuals who support Wellesley Recreation.

Looking Forward To Having Fun With You This Summer,

Jan Kaseta, Recreation Director
