The First Things You Should do in Your New Natick Home

When you’ve found that perfect home in the Natick real estate market, closed the sale and started moving in, what’s next? Besides the fact that you can finally start unpacking and settling into your new place, there are a few steps everyone should take when they move into a new home.

Change the Locks

Change the locks on your home when you move in. This is a safety precaution, since you don’t know who has copies of the keys or if the previous owner lost a set of keys and didn’t replace the locks. When you make spare keys, don’t hide them in obvious places like in the mailbox or under your doormat.

Now is also a good time to install a home security system if you don’t already have one. Use signs to let people know your home is protected and make sure all alarm system wires are out of site, so potential burglars can’t easily cut them, disarming your system.

Make Sure Utilities are in Your Name

Contact gas, power, water, garbage and Internet companies to make sure your utilities are set up and ready to go. Also be sure that they are in your name, and not the previous owner’s name.

Make a list of all your utility companies and their phone numbers and keep it in a convenient place so you can quickly contact them in case of an emergency.

Make Personalization Updates

Doing things like replacing carpet or tile, painting walls, installing new appliances and making other updates is sometimes easier to do before you unpack and start arranging furniture in your home.

If you aren’t able to make all the updates you want to right away, make note of the ideas and thoughts you have so that you can refer back to them later when you are ready to take the projects on.

Organize Everything

This is the perfect time to get organized and stay organized. You probably already cleaned out your belongings before you moved, so now organize things in closets, cupboards and storage areas as you unpack.

Seasonal items and things you don’t use very often are probably neatly packed and labeled, so leave these things in their boxes and store them.

Rethink How You use Spaces

When you arrange the furniture in your new home, rethink how you do things. Use different arrangements and mix and match your furniture to create new looks in your rooms. You can also do the same thing with décor. Moving things to different rooms and grouping new things together is an easy way to make a big change.

You can also repurpose rooms to create new space. For example, you could make that spare bedroom a home office or turn an extra living room into an entertainment room.
