The first thing people see when they approach your home or attend an open house is your home’s exterior, the front porch and your front door.  You want your home to look attractive and welcoming before people even come inside. It’s easy to understand why it’s important that the outside of your home and your landscaping are in top condition.

Redo the Front Door

Since the front door is the focal point of many homes, it needs to blend in with the house’s style but also needs to draw attention and be welcoming.

If your door is looking worn consider installing a new one, which can also increase the value of your home. For a quick update to a door that’s in good condition, try a fresh coat of paint or new finish.

Touch up the Exterior

Even small things like your mailbox, siding, light fixtures, railings, trellises, window frames and other exterior elements make an impact on how your home looks. When these things are in good condition, they contribute to an overall positive look.

Before you list your home for sale, touch up exterior elements with paint and make general repairs so that everything is in good repair and looks great.

Add Features to Create Depth and Interest

Now is also a great time to add some features to the outside of your home or your yard to add depth and interest. When your home looks interesting it will attract more buyers.

Consider installing things like a new mailbox, shutters, house numbers, awnings, walkways or planters this summer. All of these features make your home stand out and make it a little different than all the others on the market.

As you add elements to your home, remember that in many cases less is more. Add just enough to add interest but to keep things in balance. When you look at your home from the curb, you want the décor to complement your home, not overshadow or detract from it.

Tend the Landscaping

You can’t have good curb appeal without good landscaping. Make sure your lawn is healthy and trimmed and take good care of your trees, flowerbeds and plants to keep them lush and full so they look gorgeous. This spring, you can also add a few new plants to fill out your landscaping and take it up a notch.

The landscaping of your home can also be an excellent selling point that can help you attract more buyers. People are drawn to homes with beautiful properties and things like fencing, pools, patios or decks can help your home stand out.

Take advantage of this spring weather to increase your home’s curb appeal, work on its landscaping and prepare to list it for sale. Good curb appeal will attract buyers, shine during open houses and help you sell your home more quickly.
