How to Make Your Small Home Feel Spacious Before putting it on the Wellesley Market

Make any room feel bigger with these tips.

Even if your home isn’t particularly large, there are ways you can make it feel bigger and more spacious so it will appeal to buyers looking for more space. When you make some changes like this before you list your home for sale, you will get more offers and sell your home faster.

Clear the Clutter

Rooms that are cluttered feel smaller. Start by cleaning your home out and getting rid of things you don’t need or use. Then, make sure the things you do keep are organized in closets or on shelves or bookcases. You may even consider using a storage unit to store some of your belongings while you show your home.

Use the Right Furniture

Make sure the furniture in each of your rooms is to scale with the room, features and other items in the space. Small rooms should have smaller furniture, while larger, heavier furniture can help anchor and balance large rooms. Be careful not to overfill rooms with furniture, which can also make them feel smaller.

Group Furniture and Create Flow

Instead of putting furniture against walls around the perimeter of the room, pull it out and arrange it in groups. Groups of furniture can make a room feel bigger and create separate spaces, making the room more visually appealing and giving it a more spacious feel. Create flow by keeping high-traffic areas clear of furniture and using rugs and furniture to define spaces.

Create Mini-Spaces

If you have some larger rooms, group furniture and arrange accessories to create mini-spaces, which can make a home feel even bigger. A common example of this strategy is using part of a kitchen to create a breakfast nook by adding a table, chairs, a rug and appropriate lighting. The same technique can be applied to a living room by adding a bookcase, comfortable chairs and a lamp for reading.

Use Light, Neutral Colors

Light colors make rooms feel bigger and therefore more spacious. Update dark rooms with neutral, light paint colors for a clean and open look. Neutral colors are also an excellent choice because they fit almost any décor style and appeal to many people, helping potential buyers picture themselves living in your home.

Don’t Block Windows

Take advantage of windows by pulling curtains back and trimming plants outside to let in more sunlight. Windows make rooms look bigger and natural light helps add to the feeling and openness of a room. You can also hang mirrors in strategic places so that natural light is reflected, bringing more light and design elements to a room.
