How to Make Your Natick Home More Secure this Year

Easy tips for making your home a safer place!

Adding security measures to your home this year is a great way to keep your family and belongings safe. But, when you do this before you list your Natick home for sale, you could also attract more buyers.

A home security system, and other security features, will put buyers at ease as they know they are putting an offer on a home that will be safe for their family. When these features are already installed, you’ll also be helping the buyer save time and money, which is another attractive benefit.

Install a Home Security System

Installing a home security system is a great first step to take as you secure your home. There are all kinds of systems available and some even call for help if someone breaks into your home. When you do install a security system, make sure all the wires and cords are hidden so they can’t be easily cut, making it easy for a burglar to enter your home.

Post Warning Signs

You’ve probably seen those warning signs people post on their doors and windows that tell people their home has a security system. These signs are a great way to deter would-be burglars. But, don’t just post these signs in the front doors and windows; install them in the back too, as this area may actually be a bigger target for intruders.

Change the Locks when You Move In

When you move into a new house, you don’t know who has a key to the doors or if the previous owner has lost a set of keys that could get into the wrong hands. So, replace the locks on all your doors as soon as possible.

Changing locks also gives you a chance to make sure all the doors that lead outside have a locking doorknob and a deadbolt. If you want, you can also consider installing locks that also have a keypad for an entry code.

Don’t Hide the Spare Key in an Obvious Place

Nearly everyone hides a spare key in the mailbox, under the doormat or under a flowerpot on the back porch. These are all very obvious places to hide a spare key, and all places a burglar will check first. Hide your key somewhere where no one will think to look.

Some security experts actually suggest putting a spare key in a small container and then burying it in a shallow place in your garden. You’ll know where the key is, but a burglar will have a hard time finding it.

Leverage Landscaping

An easy way to make it hard for someone to access your home is to use landscaping to your advantage. Plant bushes under ground-level windows, make sure trees are trimmed away from upper windows and use landscaping lights so your yard and front porch are well lit.

Add Motion-Activated Lights and Use a Porch Light

You can also add motion-activated lights to your front porch, driveway, back porch and garage. These lights turn on when they sense motion, so you don’t always have to have a bright light shining in your yard, but it will flick on when needed. Make sure your porch light illuminates a wide area around your front door and always turn it on at night.

Implementing these security tips in your home will keep your family safe and add more features you can highlight as you list and show your home.
